Does anyone here have any experiences and advice to share from scraping popcorn ceilings?

I'm especially interested in if they were painted. I have some that are, and found a product called EZ Strip which seems to eliminate the difficulty in scraping them.

I'm looking for tips, what worked well for you, what didn't, etc.

Update:

Just finished scraping ceilings today. Had them tested for asbestos at the website recommended in another post in this thread and there was none present. The vaulted ceiling was the hardest. The painted ceilings were not hard at all, maybe because they were so old. All I used was 1 gallon of hot water and 1 cup of vinegar in a pump sprayer. I can't wait to get them refinished.

I do not want to touch another ceiling ever again.

Only advice I got is that if ceiling was built before early 80s you likely got asbestos in it.

Might want to make sure it's not asbestos first.

1. Cover floors with plastic
2. Spray lightly with water
3. Get a big scrappa and it will fall like snow.

ETA This guy is my source....

Water and solution in a hand sprayer. Clear the floors and use plastic cover. Hand spray ceilings and use scraper. Tedious and hate doing it, but don't know many other options.

I would burn the house down rather than scrape all that shite off the ceilings. It truly sucks. And if you're not careful, the new ceilings look all wavy after you're done. Personally, I would rip them down and reinstall new drywall.

All of this. I only did it in a small bathroom and it was miserable.

A family member scraped theirs, just sprayed a small area with a spray bottle of water, scraped it off with a wide blade putty knife, put the mess in a bucket as she scraped. When it's damp, the dust isn't flying everywhere.

Paying someone to do it.

I'm a DIYER guy, but that is one messy thing I was glad to pay for.

As others have said, water and a scraper. They sell special scrapers that have a collection bag attached to help minimize the mess.

After scraping, fill any imperfections with wall putty, then sand smooth.

I tested for asbestos thinking there was no way in hell it was. Sure enough it was asbestos. Tried to do it myself the right way and it is shitty work. You have to turn the AC off, seal off all the walls and dirtier and then scrape away. It's really really shitty and messy work.

My advise. Don't touch it. If you do, do it right before or after you move all furniture out of the house.

It's not asbestos. Jesus they never used that in acoustic ceilings. It is more than likely cellulose.

You can just hang new Sheetrock over it as well. Just encapsulate it. How large of an area?

First, how did you test it? Second, how did you go about removing the asbestos-laden texture from the ceiling?

Buy one of these life-changing tools from Home Depot. Most of the popcorn crap will fall into the Walmart bag that clips on.
