I buy gifts for my siblings and parents and mail to them...just mailed them off today

With my husband's family....it is just his parents, us two, and his sister and her husband and son. So holidays are always small get togethers. So we still buy gifts for each other. Although everyone usually will spend more on gifts for our nephew(he is the only child in the family at the moment so he racks up at Christmas).

I think it really just matters how big of a family you have.

Same here. Her extended family has a huge family reunion where they draw names. We never see these people outside the reunion, and everyone gets shitty, generic, <$50 gifts that no one uses. But when a group of us suggested just taking up a collection there was outrage.

I usually get a bunch of wine and liquor and candles and candies and smell good stuff and the like. Maybe something more thoughtful for those I care about.

I figure it like this. I could piss away a few hundred dollars on concert tickets or a bottle of scotch or a night out...or I could think about all the people that have supported me throughout my life and are near and dear to me and share that bounty with them.

I'll get presents for friends too. Leave stuff on doorsteps.

It makes me feel good. Even if they don't know it was me

We get it, you're an amazing and thoughtful philanthropist.

Or you could do these random acts of kindness all year, too :)

I probably have between 150-200 family members still alive, including 1st, 2nd, 3rd cousins. You want me to buy sh*t for every one of them?

Yeah, bah humbug, Mr. moneybags.

This I have no problem with. I will get random people a small but meaningful gift each year bit it is usually unexpected and not part of a formal gathering.

We do, but there are only six of us total that do it. The other half of the family doesn't, except for maybe a game of White Elephant.

I give thousands and thousands of dollars every Christmas to homeless and/or retarded people. Doesn't everyone? Had no idea that made me better than anyone else. I guess I'm just that good of a guy.

Yeah now that is ridiculous. I don't buy gifts for extended. I'll buy something for my aunt that lives out here in AZ mainly cause she is estranged from her son and grandkids(long story...he is holding a long standing stupid grudge and he refuses to have any contact with her and won't let her see or talk to her grandkids) so I feel bad for her during the holidays. Growing up my mom's side was large and the adults didn't give each other gifts usually except gifts to my grandparents. There were 15 of us cousins so we all drew names at Thanksgiving for a gift ($25 limit usually).

I do that for work. St Jude is the charity. The cards are made by the patients.

I get calls every year saying that was the best gift they received that year.

If I bought just for my kids, their SO's, my parents, brothers, sisters, and their children (nieces and nephews), I'd have to take out a loan and start shopping in October.

I'm curious to see what my mother in law gets us this year.

Some years it's a hit, but many years it is a huge miss(ex: the giant keyboard Christmas) She is a QVC addict so we get many gifts from there.

Gift giving is just for children?

What a miserable world you must live in.

I'm actually a pretty terrible person. I try to make up for it by giving gifts, like gangsters giving out turkeys at Christmas.

I try to. Visits and little things.

It's...I don't know. It feels more like Christmas when I give.
