Why should we? That's Europe's problem and they don't seem to give a shite. If they're not even willing to make an effort at a real defense than I don't think the Baltics are worth one American life.

The new Cold War is in the South China Sea. Russia is small potatoes

China's actions there are troubling to be sure. What makes that area so dangerous is there's so many players clustered together there all on top of each other.

Still, we can't ignore what Russia is doing.

Sure we can. Let the Europeans deal with Russia

Ideally that is what I'd like to see as well. But you know as well as I do they're never going to actually do what they've got to in order to be in a position to deal with Russia. Europe is too busy committing cultural suicide with the Muslim invasion. And don't think for a minute Pitin hasn't noticed and encouraged this as well.

Well Putin has been the leader of Russia for 16 years. What's he waiting for?

Russia's economy is in shambles so he increases military exercises to drum up his popularity. Russia's shown itself only able to harass very minor nations and he isn't stupid enough to mess with a NATO state

There's no doubt a diesel boat running on strictly battery (DC) power is queiter than a nuclear sub running on AC power. DC is quieter than AC because of no frequency or sound signature.

Doesn't prop/screw technology and metallurgy come into play too? I went to school with a guy that served as a sonarman aboard a fast attack and he said that they had a computer library aboard that could analyze and confirm not only the type of ship/sub they were acoustically tracking, but the exact ship that it was based on noises made from physical imperfections on the screws.

Have you actually looked at the balance of forces between NATO in Europe and Russia lately? If not, I suggest you sit down first because what you'll find will probably shock you.

SPOILER ALERT: NATO has become a joke militarily speaking.

Don't see why I should care about this. If they aren't attacking ships and aren't hindering shipping lanes why does it matter if they have subs?

Remind me again what they are doing. Unless you are suggesting that Russia is trying to start a war and not in some junk measuring contest, why should I care about Russia's military build up?

If we didn't feel the need to participate in their shenanigans and build up in response, they'd just look stupid wasting their money.

That's truly sad.

Meh, I'll take an Ohio class in natural circulation or a third flight Virginia (AC/DC converters at the controller) over any of the diesel electrics.

We spent some time hanging out in the SCS near the Spratly Islands for some time creeping up on country X's diesel electrics.

Like Alum said doe, none of that compares to the old stories from the Cold War. That shite was won on the backs of submariners.

Don't worry, we can always reinstate the draft if things get hairy.

Was on the Providence - Change in Opord back in 95.. redirected from a Med cruise to follow an Akula which had come down through the GI/UK gap.. 30 days under the ice... We were at modified section tracking party/battle stations torpedo the entire time - worked time-freq plot 12 on 12 off.. that, was tense.

I was on Pittsburgh... Only thing we did was track an Akula for 3 days while it was sitting outside of King's Bay.

Are you an electrician? Section tracking party on time freq was the absolute worst.

That part of the job was never mentioned in the nuc recruiting brochures

absolutely true...each submarine has a unique acoustic fingerprint and the USN keeps/disseminates those records

Each 688 has a sonar room that is comparable to your average data center for a midsize company. Think 24 racks of servers each tasked with analyzing/cataloging specific frequencies.

Essentially every USN fast attack submarine has their very own supercomputer built specifically for sonar

When a new ship (foreign or US) goes out to sea we do our absolute best to get an acoustic profile. This can be done via sub tracking, SOSUS, or those little sonar ships the USN contracts out to float around the ocean listening in for submarines
