Admiral Warns: Russian Subs Waging Cold War-Style ‘Battle of the Atlantic’

More proof that we'd be wise to not trust those Russian frickers.

Russia has stepped up its submarine operations and is regularly probing U.S. anti-submarine networks in a new “Battle of the Atlantic,” the commander of U.S. 6th Fleet said.
In an article for the U.S. Naval Institute’s June issue of Proceedings, Vice Adm. James Foggo III outlined a new era in U.S. and Russian submarine warfare he dubs “The Fourth Battle of the Atlantic.”
In his piece, Foggo compares the current uptick in Russian submarine posture to the great submarine battles between the Allies and the Germans in World War I and World War II and the Soviets and the U.S. during the Cold War.
quote:
“Once again, an effective, skilled, and technologically advanced Russian submarine force is challenging us. Russian submarines are prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas, and preparing the complex underwater battlespace to give them an edge in any future conflict,” Foggo wrote.
“Not only have Russia’s actions and capabilities increased in alarming and confrontational ways, its national-security policy is aimed at challenging the United States and its NATO allies and partners.”

Captain Marko Ramius:
"Once more, we play our dangerous game, a game of chess against our old adversary - The American Navy. For forty years, your fathers before you and your older brothers played this game and played it well.
We will pass through the American patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll... while we conduct missile drills."

They think they will anyways...meanwhile there's a 688 about 500 yards back waiting to shove an ADCAP up their arse
And they didn't even know we were there

Yeah. Other than the 10000 nuclear warheads they have

pretty serious stuff. I heard they just launched a new submarine that was diesel powered. Dear Putin, the west won the cold war.
In all seriousness, they probably will need all the subs they can manage when LNG transports start making their way from the US to Europe.

Russia has a reputation for building great submarines but their maintenance and sonar systems have never been on the same level as the USN

Putin plays Obama like a bitch.

Such a valid analogy, buddy. Good job.

Let's also remember that these admirals have to scare us so that we write our congressman demanding they continue funding our military bc those damn ruskies are gonna attack us at any moment

This may sound like outdated technology but using a diesel/electric system is extremely quiet and hard to detect. In fact, they can be far more quiet than a nuke sub.
quote:
The Navy in recent months has had to contend with several provoking episodes at sea — Iranian small boats speeding at its cruisers, destroyers and frigates; Russian bombers flying over its carriers; and Chinese subs shadowing its warships.
Hard-to-detect submarines — such as quiet, diesel-electric boats — are particularly vexing, Navy officials say. They contend that an undersea arms race already has begun in the western Pacific.
Nations there in recent years have begun to acquire stealthy diesel-electric submarines. Some of those nations, say Navy officials, could one day threaten U.S. access to strategic coastal areas of the world or interrupt the flow of commerce around the globe.
Although the Navy has the world’s most technologically advanced fleet — including state-of-the-art nuclear attack submarines — officials acknowledge that these comparatively low-tech diesel-electric boats could give an enemy an asymmetric advantage.
“The beauty about a diesel submarine is that it has the potential to be far quieter than a nuclear submarine,” says Guy Stitt, president of AMI International, a Bremerton, Wash.-based company specializing in naval market analysis. Diesel boats are propelled by batteries when submerged and move through the water by diesel engines when on the surface.

Marko needs to learn the distinction between passed and past.

I LOVE the fact that China and Russia are modernizing their subs. It's gives the US fast attack sub force more missions than simply being attached to a carrier battle group.
I would have loved going on a North Atlantic deployment chasing Russian subs as they left port or went under the ice cap. Unfortunately, I served from 96 to 00 when the Great Red Fleet was gutted. My deployments were always being a forward picket for a CBG. We did spend sometime in 00 waiting to launch TLAMs at Al Qaeda in Afghanistan but never got the orders.

It can also be used for location: “Beyond in place; further on than; at or on the further side of; to a point beyond.” (OED)

We're at war with Eastasia. We've always been at war with Eastasia.

Actually my post was a little tongue-in-cheek about the russian sub and you posting russian propaganda again.
But I'll admit I did read they were launching a smaller/quieter subs to disrupt shipping lanes.

I know a dude who was a sub mariner back in the 70's and 80's. Some of the stories he's told me of the cat and mouse games they use to play with Soviet boats were fascinating.

I think you're getting me mixed up with RedRifle. He's a Russian/Putin fan. I'm the exact opposite. I'm an old Cold War era vet who doesn't like or trust those bastards any further than I can toss a T-80 main battle tank.
He posts shite to praise his hero Putin and Russia.
I post shite to show how they're evil and we'd better watch what they're doing.
