Going to Rome for the first time this summer. I'm curious as to the board's recommendations of must do activities or must see tours? We'll be staying there for 3 full days. Thoughts?

I'd love to hear what yall have to say!

Thanks!!

Walk a lot. Drink sparkling water.

ETA: and eat gelato at Gelateria Della Palma. You're welcome.

It's great. Do the night walk from the square to the Spanish steps, drink wine along the way. Get Rick Steve's book for Rome too. The pantheon was my favorite thing

I hear the coliseum is nice. Probably some cool art museums too.

The coliseum is seriously overrated if you've frequented Tiger Stadium.

Great suggestions so far! What's the board's thoughts on a bike tour of ancient Rome?

My initial concern is that we'd be rushed to see all the sights and not have time to walk around and appreciate the history.

Spend one day at the Vatican and two days checking out the Roman Ruins. I suggest getting Frommer's Guide for Italy.

As someone else mentioned the Pantheon was one of my favorites. If I remember correctly they have a pretty neat square next to it where you can get good food and drinks.

First time in Rome and you want to get a bike? You're gonna get run over by some crazy drivers.

It's a guided tour. And inexpensive. But I'm convinced to spend some time at the Sistine Chapel

If you have interest in the Church I would highly suggest the Scavi tour. LINK

It takes you directly under the altar in St. Peter, shows you the bones of St Peter. After this is done you are brought up to the actual church so 2 tours for the price of 1. Just follow the directions on the link to schedule.

Also check out the crypt of capuchins. LINK

Good luck. It is awesome and wear se comfortable shoes.

I wouldn't worry about feeling rushed when seeing the ruins. Most of the ruins have been reduced to a pile of rocks. It's been 17 years since I was there, but I remember being let down when viewing the ancient Rome ruins.

Rick Steves has walking tours that you can download to your iPhone. You can do them at your own pace. Mash Here

Also, download Trip Advisor City Guides APP to your phone. If you get one of those minimal phone/text plans you can use the map and restaurant feature. In Prague and Budapest, I found it to be VERY accurate.

If you don't see the Pantheon and the Vatican (Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's, Vatican Museum), you might as well not go to Rome. ETA: Make sure you have a reservation for the Vatican Tour.

You must eat the following: Gelato, Pizza Margherita, and pasta carbonara. Also, drink lots of wine. Chianti and Fragolino. Can't miss.

Do NOT go into a shirt shop with all Roma Soccer jerseys and ask for a Lazio or Napoli jersey. You will start an international incident.

Good luck. It's a great trip. Wish I could go back.
