What do you use on the sides to close up the gaps between the box and side of the window?

You could get one of the free-standing portable AC units, that way you can move it from living room during the day to your bedroom at night. Just need a window to vent through... would cost more than a hotel room, but you can always keep it around if you want a little extra cooling in your bedroom during the summer or you can run it off a generator if you lose power.

Portable units come with fanfold panels that close the gaps. I was lucky a couple years ago I had a length of 1" board I could put on the sill to elevate the thing above the edge of the window. I guess you could use books or a stack of magazines in a pinch.

Pony up and get a hotel, or sweat it out and enjoy the sauna. What says the OT?

Neither. There's no recovering from this one. Fill your pockets with rocks and go for a swim.
