So, I'm not an AC guy. I know the basics and the elctronics but I hate doing sealed system repair so I stay away from AC units.

Anyway. My neighbors a/c unit was attacked by crazy ants.

First to suffer was the fan motor, they had it changed out and it ran great for five days.

Then AC was off again, the contactor switch was full of ants, so they (rather than pay the AC guy for the new switch) cleaned it and the AC seemed to work.
The day after that the potential relay started smoking out of no where. Well it was the weekend so they couldn't do anything.
Today I go out, pick them up a potential relay, a 2 pole 30 amp 24Vac contactor switch, a new compressor run capacitor and a new start capaictor. All four parts cost a grand total of $38. (yes the mark up on AC parts is high lol)

I changed them out, and the compressor came right on. The fan did not.
The diagram was not there, but I can wire a potential relay in my sleep and it is only used to kick on the start capacitor to start the unit's compressor and has no bearing on the fan.

The contacor is pretty simple too. basically a large multi-pole relay. I am 10000% certain that everything is wired right. The fan won't start on it's on.

So. I push start the fan, let it run for the twenty minutes it took me to go get a 7.5uf 330v capacitor for the fan. Came back, fan had stopped and compressor had stopped because of safety cut off.

Put the new capacitor in, fan works, but is super slow and loud, and compressor didn't kick back on.

I hate trying to do favors, because I was offering all this for free

My thought is that something is wrong with the fan, as it just sounds bad.
But now I know the guy who installed the fan, may not want to work on it after I worked behind him. (we are all friendly, but I hate working after other people I'm sure he feels similarly)

Well now it's after 5 I can;t get a new cap this late anyway. Can't decide if I should check the microfarad readings again. Other than the fan just being a piece f shite or the capacitors being bad again, I can't figure out why the fan won't start.

There are a few AC guys on the OT, after starting the thread I realized it's more of a statement than a question.

I'm just perplexed why this stupid thing isn't running.

freaking ants in everything

Sounds like it might be single phasing. Check to make sure you have 220 accross your contactors.

hmm. good call, I'll check that real quick.

I left the panel off I can check that real fast.

What gets me is the start capacitor is brand new, but when I just checked it I got .17 uF instead of 175uf.

Odd. I was waiting on the AC guy because maybe my cpacitance meter is off. Though I checked two microwave capacitors and they both read spot on.
Just odd that a capacitor would fail so soon without popping.

Is this one of those multi speed/variable speed units?

If so, they usually run a ramp up curve when starting up and only go to full speed if the set point isn't reached inside.

The online specs say the XL1200 has a 2 speed fan.

Just a guess.

yeah it's multi-speed.

My friend who put the fan in is coming by and we are going to look at it. I just hate being stumped.
The voltage reads 238 across so I'm in my 220-240 VAC target area.

Something is up with the fan or the fans run capacitor.
Just crazy that it has to be a brand new part that failed, as everything on the outside unit except the compressor and the thermostat control are brand new.
