I figure we've got enough OT badassess and real military flyboys to answer this.

When Maverick and Hollywood are up against Viper and Jester, they both break off and engage Jester while Viper flys off. Maverick breaks off and goes after Viper. Hollywood eventually loses the engagement to Jester and he sneaks up on Mav and Goose and gets them.

So my question is: What should Maverick had done there? If he stays covering Hollywood, what's to prevent Viper from getting on their tails and taking them both out?

That's my point. If Mav stays with Hollywood, what's to stop Viper from getting both of them?

The real answer is it's just a movie. They needed to show Maverick for what he was, you know, a maverick.

The defense department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid.

Also. You don't have time to think up there. If you think, you're dead.

Yeah but I'm sure that scenario is a pretty common one in aerial combat. I was wondering what they actually should do there.

I should have known better than to ask this on the OT.

And if you screw up just this much, you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shite out of Hong Kong!

Well, at that point all he has to do is let him get real close then slam on the brakes and he will fly right by

I think this is the correct answer.

My understanding is that most IRL dogfights in the jet age have been short turning fights where you are trying to make a smaller turn radius than the other guy on order to get in a shot.

So most likely, none of what happened in that scene makes sense.

I dont know the answer to this but I do know that my 4th grade teachers husband flew in Top Gun. His dad owned an air service company in Houma.

This is the correct answer. If you look closely Mavericks plane is the newer version that came with anti lock brakes. Viper is in the older version with the old brake system. Maverick will decelerate smother and faster. Viper will skid past him allowing Maverick to get the kill shot.
