On a scale of 1-10 of worst ways to go- this has to be at about 14.

Investigators do not think foul play was involved and due to the location and isolation of the incident it is likely to never be known what transpired to get such a horrific result.

It happens. Cows will occasionally fall in and drown.

So does that mean they probably did the whole drowning routine where one of them got in trouble and fell in some way and then the next one and then the next one jumped in after to try and save the others?

Probably. The pumps in those things have to be worked on sometime and you have to get out there in it.

Apparently these ponds are created by hosing off the livestock containment areas like where the cows are milked and then it must be all pumped into a sort of pond? From there it’s turned into fertilizer and then eventually spread onto the fields? I’m wondering if the gasses got to them? Or why the hell would the go into the pond? I’d have to assume they have some safety equipment to prevent accidents right?

They may have been overcome by methane gas. I read of a similar incident where eight members of one family (three generations) perished in a manure pit.
