In today's episode of WTF...

quote:

Nearly 8,000 New Orleans residents in the 7th Ward and Bywater were without power early Monday morning after someone cut into an Entergy service pole with a chainsaw, an Entergy spokesperson said.

The outage was reported at 5:56 a.m. and impacted just over 7,800 Entergy customers across the 7th Ward, Bywater, Marigny and St. Claude neighborhoods, according Entergy's outage map

Why is someone cutting into a power pole with a chainsaw?

Why are they doing this before dawn?

It's crazy that it's so easy to take 8,000 people out of power.

Guessing you’ve never seen some of the fine folks the 7th Ward and Bywater have to offer..

A mentally ill person with a chainsaw could have damaged a lot worse things than an electric pole. Could have been like a horror movie.

Maybe someone was high as a kite and having delusions that the pole was spying on them?

They can usually re-route power, but I guess it depends on which pole was cut.

I caught a lot of shite for this exact gripe after Ida. People said I was ungrateful since just our power was out and nothing damaged. But
My neighborhood in Gonzales was out of power for 7 days despite having absolutely no damage to the houses or properties in our neighborhood.

The culprit was a SINGLE downed pole about .5 mile a way on the highway.

The problem was there were about a million poles down or something unheard of. So it took 6.5 days to even show up at our downed pole. It was repaired and power restored in 12 hours.

The real root cause of the massive extended power outages after Ida? Entergy around South Louisiana has no redundancy nor emergency capability to overlap/connect to other working power lines. And Yes this technology DOES exist and it's not THAT expensive to incorporate.

So 48 hours after Ida Our neighbors just to the left of the subdivision(downed pole was to the right) had power while we remained dark for 5 more days. Total bullshite.

TLDR IT's absurd and unacceptable(i guess it is) in 2024 that one utility pole can take out power to so many residences.

Cost: Benefit ratio. That's what drives everything.

Entergy is comfortable with replacing that one pole every few years and losing that couple hundred customers for a week as a result. That's not much revenue loss (and a very cheap repair). Compare that to likely a 10-50x cost to harden it so it won't happen again.

If you want a hardened grid, make sure to buy a house near a hospital.

I feel the same about people who don't have some kind of emergency back-up generator.

It’s NOLA. Why expect a logical explanation to be involved?

Imagine a water hose. You are at end of the hose opposite the hose bib. The water is on and and you are getting water from the hose.

Now imagine somebody cuts the hose at any location ahead of you. Are you still getting water? No. And you won't until someone repairs the hose.

Come on people, this isn't that hard.

You have no idea what that costs, especially if everyone in 4 states expected it.
