Just talked briefly with a really good friend of mine tonight at base camp via his satellite phone. Over 60 bodies recovered and they are headed back up the ice falls to rescue climbers stuck in falls who are still alive. Ice bridges are mostly destroyed. Helis just started rescuing the injured. Sounds like he expects the death toll to increase even higher. I'm worried about him for PTS because he didn't sound good. Ice doctors left the mountain and will not return so it's up to remaining foreigners, military, and climbers to rescue those stranded or injured

And they just had the deadliest day last year. Looks like this one will make that one look tiny by comparison.

I don't mean to sound callous, but I hope resources aren't being taken away from the indigenous relief effort to rescue wealthy foreigners. It's an awful situation, but if you put yourself in a situation like that, you have to go into it knowing you put yourself in a high risk environment and if the rescue assets are needed elsewhere, you're on your own.

Awful.

And GD right, I agree with you. I've listened to countless midnight stories of the indigenous and their literal mountain pass shanty villages. Winding road poverty.

Local Nepalese who act as bearers, camp builders and route planners for the tourist climbers.

Nepalese ethnic group that lives in the Everest region. Their physiology is uniquely adapted to high altitude. Many of them make their living as guides and porters.

Himalayas are roughly the same latitude as central and South Florida, so temperature doesn't fluctuate much throughout the year. Monsoon is the critical factor. When the prevailing wind is from the south, it brings moisture, and therefore storms.

Discovery has been showing a documentary on last year's avalanche tonight, surreal.

Gotcha. I didn't know that one either. I assumed the climbing season would have been later. I knew who the Sherpas are, though.

I posted this earlier but since more people are commenting:
I know that this is an odd question/observation considering the event, but I can't help but wonder if any of the famous dead bodies of Mt Everest have become dislodged.

Like green boots and others. This sounds like a catastrophic event for Mt Everest.

They are all on there own because there are no resources other than Indian military who are already on mountain. Most of the villages on the way up to Everest are leveled.

So are all the climber deaths and everest village destruction due to the avalanche itself? Were there multiple avalanches?

Mid to Late April is prep stage, May is prime climbing time, and your off the mountain by early June. Typical climber takes 6-9 weeks

Which roughly starts June 1st.

Yall may not have been aware of it, but there was massive flooding and death in Uttarakhand 2013 in the region due to monsoon rains.

My driver was from Himachal Pradesh. He emailed me the day before the earthquake and I assume he's fine from the reports.

Terrible situation. I decided not to do Kathmandu with our limited time but wish I had more time to do so. I hope they didn't lose too much of their cultural landmarks. Tourism is about it for that area to help them recover. I see they lost the tower, which was a UNESCO site.
