King Phiilip of France was heavily in-debt to the greatest banking power in the world, the Templar Knights due to his war with the. English. They had branches all across Europe and Asia and even had asset management products!

The King arrested all the Tenplars in France on October 13, 1307 and got all of his buddy kings to do the same. They tortured the Templars to co fess that they spit on the cross and that they worshiped a decapitated head. Many were burned alive and most of the order was demolished.

Bad enough that Friday October 13th is considered super bad luck. We get one next year but I didn't feel like waiting.

After years of research we have found that it appears an ancestor of mine was one of the last burned alive for refusing to confess.

You can say "as a kid..i remember all I needed was a bicycle and a Saturday", and at the same time..are able to appreciate the entertainment advances of today.

In my opinion the treasure got divided up over years.
I say this because after reading books like "The history of The Knights Templar" There were many less than brilliant generals in the Templar's. The larger the sacrifice (money)or donation made at the time you joined the higher the instant rank you received. One general was captured while escorting a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and decided to pay for the safe release of his men and women rather than fight. After paying something like 5 dinar per man the were beheaded one at a time just out of site. All the women turned into slaves. He was held for a larger ransom and was released after payment. 2 years later he lead another group capture in the same spot, paid the same amount with same results but he himself beheaded after the head Mounty refused to pay his ransom.

Cliff notes: many Knights were dumb as a rock.

I found a name matching the spelling of our last name at the time in the records of Templar executions. My brother went to Luxembourg and found the same name and birth'death dates. Put it in to his timeline on Ancestors account and it matched up.

Date of death and place of death matched with the last Templar's public burning. Could not find his grave if there is one. Ashes don't require a grave and to play out the reason for execution, it was be leaved burying the ashes in a catholic cemetery were forbidden.

So what was their leverage with him, that made him feel the need to do all of that to them?

Kings at that time were always extremely short on cash to fight wars. Believe it or not, they weren't all powerful in the Middle Ages. They had to do a lot of politicking to get what they want. The absolute monarchy ideas didn't really get going till later. They didn't really have efficient taxing standards.

The Templars were super rich and had a ton of profit. Their military strength though was zero since the Crusades ended.

But the French King had an intriguing relationship with the Pope. There were difficult negotiations to allow Phillip to go after the Templars. But he erased a ton a debt by being allowed to go after them.
