BERKELEY (KPIX) — A balcony collapsed early Tuesday morning, killing six people and wounding at least seven who plunged from several stories up.

Irish Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan told reporters in Dublin that at least five of those killed were Irish students in the U.S. on temporary visas. He said a 21st birthday party was underway in the building at the time of the accident.

It happened on a fourth floor apartment at the Library Gardens apartment complex at 2020 Kittredge Street, about a block from the UC campus, just before 1 a.m.

Berkeley Fire Department and Berkeley Police responded to treat the wounded and manage traffic through the area.

Many of the wounded may have severe, even life threatening injuries, and authorities say the number of injured may rise, but at least 13 were on the balcony when it gave way.

“It’s a difficult scene,” said Berkeley police spokeswoman Jennifer Coates. “Unfortunately it’s going to be a more difficult day for the family of the victims that were involved in this.”

This story reminds me of the Common Ground balcony collapse. For you young ones, the Common Ground was a bar on Highland Road and it happened in the early 70s

Drunk college students don't understand their balconies can't support an arse load of people on them. This happens pretty frequently.

Damn...so assumingly 13 people probably weighing a less than 2500 lbs combined snapped that balcony off... Design flaw? Structural issue? Or way to damn many people on it ??

Death should be considered a long term injury, IMO.

Balconies in NYC (by building code) are rated to hold a uniform live load of 100lb/ft2. Just looking at the balcony, I would guess its maybe 6'x4'. If thirteen people were really in that little balcony I could see how it would be over its rated capacity.

ETA- that really depends on how heavy the 13 people are. 13 guys vs 13 girls is two very different scenarios.

ETA 2- Even at its rated capacity, there should have been a safety factor of 1.5+ assuming the designers followed NDS correctly. This might be a contractor issue instead.

Any time I'm in the FQ and stand on a balcony and see it start to get really crowded I step off. Its paranoia but I don't trust 300 year old buildings

campaign to ban balconies

In some parts of the country, builders are refusing to build balconies and decks. They put the door there and seal it when they are done.

If the homeowner wants one it's up to them to have it done.

This might be a contractor issue (too little reinforcement, or too weak of concrete).

Since when do wood structures depend on reinforcement and concrete?
