With a traditional decapitation, say, by guillotine, the severed head rapidly loses blood, causing loss of consciousness on the order of seconds.

However, when a limb is severed via lightsaber, the wound is instantly cauterized - trapping the blood within the limb.

It would seem then that if one's head is decapitated via lightsaber (or equivalent), one would retain consciousness much longer - on the order of a couple of minutes or longer even.

Is there any validity to this theory?

Doubtful, the blood stops flowing from the head as soon as the heart's connection is broken. I guess you could argue that the blood would leak out, but chances are your brain would have already suffocated.

You would immediately cut the brain off from all oxygen. Not like when you hold your breath. In that case, you actually holding a small oxygen reserve. In this case there would be none. So the head would die roughly, by calculations, very fast.

Tissue death is tissue death regardless of whether its from lack of fresh oxygenated blood or blood in general. If the blood doesn't have fresh Oxygen, then the tissue will die. So I wouldn't think the head wouldn't live any longer from decapitation from a light saber than from another method.

But how hot would a light saber (plasma sword) be?

Way to hot to use for decapitation.

There's really only one way to find out. Report back to us what you discover.

But how much of the interior would have to removed to make it a light one?

Cells don't instantly use up all the oxygen in blood as soon as the blood gets to them, do they? Wouldn't the blood itself have some oxygen left in it after the time one would otherwise have died from bleeding out - not an optimal amount, but enough for some consciousness?
