Rothko is a far cry from the slop made by modern artists. Yes we had a long thread on this a few weeks ago and it was striking how pitiful some of the modern art is that was posted. There was one pic that compares modern art example with a chimps scrawl and they're indistinguishable.

The thing about the Rothko paintings is there's actually a ton of under painting that doesn't show up on photographs. You actually have to sit in front of one for a few minutes before your eyes adjust to see the other colors painted underneath.

That's why they usually have benches in front so you can sit and let your eyes adjust. Idk about being "moved emotionally" but his paintings are far from just solid squares.

Right. That's what I've read but I haven't seen one.

I try not to dismiss things I haven't experienced personally or don't understand.

Sometimes works of art have to be put into context.

That's a Caravaggio alright. Saw a few of those in the Uffizi. Style is unmistakeable.

1610=/= Renaissance
Renaissance is 1300-1600 depending on where in Europe you are.

Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog Sculpture Sells for Record-Breaking $58.4 Million
Million
Christie's
The sum is the highest ever paid for a work by a living artist.

Pop-art provocateur Jeff Koons has broken a world record for a price paid for a single artwork by a living artist. His sculpture "Balloon Dog (Orange)" fetched $58,405,000 at a Christie's New York auction on Tuesday night. High-end estimates suggested it might sell for as much as $55 million. (The previous record-holder was a painting by Gerhard Richter depicting an Italian city square, which sold for $37.1 million in May.) Christie's has released no information as to the identity of the winning bidder.

The thing about it is, no matter what you pay, that transaction establishes the value. In 3,5 or 10, years; it will be worth more. You sorta can't lose unless you need to fire sell it at a bad time.

Assuming you're not buying a forgery.
