That looks like a Rothko.

Allegedly, you have to see them in person to appreciate them. When viewed via internet, they just look like squares. Supposedly, when viewed in person, they are huge canvases and somehow, despite being quite abstract, they invoke very real and deep emotions in people that wouldn't expect it at all, hence part of the reason for the supposed genius.

Allegedly.

I found this in my basement last week...

How much do you think it's worth?

I love the way people dismiss art so readily here.

Art is everywhere. I love art. Without art, we're just apes.

Art for art's sake y'all. Think about it.

I love art. The painting in the OP and how it was found is awesome, and interesting as hell. Somebody looking at those squares and getting emotional is hilarious, though.

I don't dismiss it. I just don't get it. At all. Again, visual art. I can barely sign my name so maybe that's why I don't get it.

But I like big fat titties.

That's incredible.

I can't believe it's still in perfect condition.

I call bullshite. Just watched a documentary about a master forgerer. Art dealers want paintings to be genuine because they will make a fortune off of commissions and the experts can be bought to authenticate them.

Tiger Rob is on it

That's a big painting to miss for any amount of time you are in a house until a leak needs fixing.

Exactly what I was thinking! Think of how many people lived in the house through the years...how in the hell did it go unseen for this long? F'ing crazy I tell ya!

My art has been commended as being strongly vaginal which bothers some men. The word itself makes some men uncomfortable. Vagina.

I'm not making it up or anything. Have you seen one in person? I have not, but virtually all accounts say that, not just some art snob. That's what made him such a sensation, among other things.

Hell, they talk about it on Mad Men.

I have not seen one but I'm not quick to dismiss things out of hand.

The thing about the Rothko paintings is there's actually a ton of under painting that doesn't show up on photographs. You actually have to sit in front of one for a few minutes before your eyes adjust to see the other colors painted underneath.

That's why they usually have benches in front so you can sit and let your eyes adjust. Idk about being "moved emotionally" but his paintings are far from just solid squares.

Caravaggio was my personal favorite of the period. So dramatic, incredible use of light.
I feel for the dumbos that say artists are great because their paintings look like photos.
