as soon as we landed I looked at my dad and I said, uh, I said 'Dad, where are we at?' And he looked at me and he says, 'hey, we're aboard the American carrier USS Hancock.' And I say, 'well, what does that mean?' And he looked at me and he said, 'that means nothing in the world can harm you now.' "

I can remember watching TV the day that Saigon fell. I have I never forgotten some of the scenes that I watched on that day. Very sad day.

My dad did refugee missions with the Air Force in March/April '75.
Has the little framed thingy on the wall to prove it

My dad was a master chief on the Hancock and had two tours in VN but retired in 1974 so missed the massive evacuation effort but we certainly followed it on TV (I was a HS senior).

I remember watching that as well. Also Walter Cronkite had the nightly MIA/KIA number.
Two kids on my street, my age, both dads Air Force pilots shot down over North Vietnam, one prisoner in Hanoi Hilton for years the other MIA for several years before they determined he had died on impact. Never ejected and they found his jet. My sisters had their silver bracelets. A big parade when the one came home. He saw his youngest daughter who was about 6 then and he never even knew he had her.
Thinking back there were several others on my street that served, older brothers and fathers. One bought a Sunbeam sports car before he left and never returned.

It's becoming debatable.

I had an uncle who flew Huey's and a cousin that was a door gunner on a Huey. Also had another uncle that did "stuff" in Cambodia and Loas.

My wife was almost 4 when her family left on an overstuffed Air Force cargo plane on April 27. To this day, she is terrified of fireworks and they always go out of their way when they meet a Vietnam vet to thank them.
They have some incredible stories of the last days.

i'm thankful for the Vietnam war... without it, my wife wouldn't have been born here, and well, my life would be very different right about now...
