job a: a little over $100k, pretty much salary capped (won't increase much over your career, you're at the ceiling and there is no where to be "promoted" to), great job security. you don't hate the job, but it's not your "passion".

job b: completely different field from job a. salary would be about $70k, but you would be doing your hobby, something you love doing in a field you've been obsessed with since you were a kid. promotion and salary increases are possible.

if you had these two options sitting in front of you, which would you honestly go with?

Well I work 2 jobs and still make less than your 70k, while raising 4 kids
Obviously I suck, if you finish college kids, you have choices.

Eta: I love both places, couldn't be happier

How different are they? I mean if one was doing accounting for 100k and the other was the guy who tests out how good porn stars are at giving blow jobs all day for 70k I would take the lower pay.

I'd go with this option. I know most would say go for the money but doing what you love and will be really happy with is best in my book.

You realize that if you take B, you'll no longer meet the minimal income required for posting on the OT?

Do you have a spouse and/or family? What do they think about it? What's the job security situation with B? Is it possible doing it for a living might kill the enjoyment of it? Are you sure you're being objective and not looking at as a grass is greener situation? If you can answer all that satisfactorily, go with B.

B, because you'd be much happier. But it also depends on where you live (cost of living) and whether you feel you could manage with the pay cut.

If you can afford it, go with B.

Once you've hit the ceiling at a job, no matter what you make, it's going to be a grind.

Depends on whether I value money or 40 hours/week of my time more.

I think all jobs kinda suck balls, or else they wouldn't pay you to do them....and I absolutely wouldn't go and ruin a hobby that I enjoy by making a job out of it....

also, 30K per year is life-changing money...couple that with job security, which is rare these days, and there is no way I would leave the higher paying job...

As a general rule; I don't spend a whole bunch of time doing something I hate so that I can spend a little bit of time doing something I like.

Take the pay cut...

For that kind of money? Easily option b. doing something you enjoy just makes you so much fricking happier. I am making peanuts right now but I actually look forward to working and it just makes me so much happier overall. Waking up early, staying late, the commute, etc... All the bullshite about a job is much more tolerable when you are enjoying the brunt of your work.

no spouse or kids, finishing school soon.

job security for b is less than a, but both are high demand jobs.

yes, doing it for a living may take the enjoyment out of it, hence the hesitation.

Depends how long it would take to make up that $30k/yr at job B. Probably would go option A regardless given that you don't hate it. $100k to $70k is a pretty big lifestyle change.
