Steering, mostly. With that much HP on such a small / light boat, you need weight in the front to help keep more of the hull in the water so the boat reacts better to a command to turn.

Pretty sure at those speeds and tree branches the helmet will only determine if it's a closed casket or open casket if you hit one.
