The price of ether, the cryptocurrency that powers the world's second-largest blockchain platform, ethereum, passed $100 today to reach a new all-time high today.

Up 25% over the last 24 hours, the price of ether has now increased more than 1,000% on the year. (It was trading at roughly $8 on 1st January.) At press time, the cryptocurrency had a market cap of $9bn, according to figures from data source Coinmarketcap, a service that aggregates the price across available exchange APIs.

Couple this with Bitcoin's current price of roughly $1,600, and the overall market cap for cryptocurrencies is around $45B

Been following on the Money Talk

Couple guys got in early.

It hasn't opened up to China yet, so there is still a ton of growth, like when Bit caught its second wind recently.

Very interesting. A bunch of dogs in the industry are legitimizing it.

Would sell my Bitcoin immediately if I had any. This market is going to saturate swiftly with more cryptos coming to the table.

The allure of these new forms of currency is the untraceability of them. A prime vehicle for illicit transacations.

Wouldn't that also increase the chances of buying counterfeit currency or being scammed in some way?

I've been wondering why I didn't buy during the pre-sale these last couple of weeks. It's hard for me to wrap my head around.

That and bitfinex is margin trading up to $300 more than okcoin, btcc, and huobi... lots of arbitrage out there if you can move into Chinese currency and exhanges easily.

I actually had a fair number of Ethereum since I was able to jump on it early but like an idiot I liquidated it long before the surge in price. Oh well.
