well nothing. they are reaping the rewards of not doubling..tripling...quadrupling..quintupling..sextupling..octupling...but NONUPLING the rate.
that TUPLE is so crazy i had to look up what its called.
thats just comical that ya'll think its acceptable for them to go up to 900% on the rate during 'prime time' aka bars closing.
its stupid tax for stupids right?
Then don't f'ing use Uber! Call a damn cab. Or here's an idea...have a DD or walk.
Uber could charge $2000 for a 2 mile ride, and you would fail to see me outraged about it.
They are kind enough to add safeguard measures to do their best to ensure people know what they are getting into when they use their app.
People need to take some f'in responsibility for themselves and stop acting as if they are a fricking helpless leaf blowing in the unforgiving winds of evil capitalism.

que?
so she's not allowed to have a social life because she doesn't make alot of money? i highly doubt she imagined spending $300+ dollars on a cab ride to get home from a bar.
when i was poor and living in houston after graduating college i went out almost every night with friends..thats kinda the time of your life you're supposed to be out enjoying yourself.
Did you post sob stories and try to get strangers to help recoup the money you spent on bar tabs?
She can do whatever the hell she wants. Just don't expect others to bail you out when you make stupid decisions. The less money you have, the less margin you have for error, so you need to minimize your unwise decisions.

thats called free market economics.
You set your price. if it's too high the market wont pay it.
The consumer has the ultimate decision. She made a stupid decision, woke up, didnt like it, and wanted to be bailed out.
It's the height of irresponsibility. Probability this bitch ends up as a single mom? .7

It's simple supply and demand economics. They are a private company and can charge whatever they please. They are not forcing anyone to use them. Why is it so hard for people to understand that you are not forced to use their product? If you don't like them you can find a different means of transportation.
Is that so hard?

Surge pricing examined and explained
LINK
My favorite bit from the video: the tweet that says "I'm an MBA and get supply/demand. 7.5x is well beyond demand. Holiday pay is 1.5x not 7.5! #pricegouging"
What an idiot. I'm sure his business professors facepalmed when they saw this.

I used Uber 3 times in New Nork over the weekend. The wknd of the New York marathon, and never had to wait longer than 5 min before the driver arrived. I only played surge pricing once, yesterday right after the race, but it notifies you 3 times that you will be paying surge pricing, and you even have to type in how much the surge pricing is before it allows you to continue.
I gladly played 2x's normal fare to have a clean car pick us up in 3 min from the hotel, and get us to the airport on time, all while one of the biggest marathons in the world was going on a block from the hotel.

Well I do like the idea of flexible rates. From the driver's perspective, he can make bank after he brings you up shite creek without a paddle.
From the passenger's perspective, they can get a guaranteed reserved car and not have to depend on shitty taxi service. That's worth premium pricing to me.
I don't have a problem with this so long as the prices are agreed to before the service is provided.

but I should not have to be responsible for my decisions.

If it wasn't a fair price, she wouldn't have agreed to it. Either she doesn't understand supply/demand or she hopes that there are enough people who don't that will give her money for rent.
She could have walked, found a taxi, took public transit, or drove. No one forced her to use Uber.

Well clearly he does not.
If people are willing to pay 7.5 then clearly there is a demand for it.
Also Surge Charging is not the same as overtime pay or holiday pay.
I don't know where this guy got their MBA from but it must have been pretty shitty.

1. yep, uber is like apple. you can't make a comment without 30 people saying 'DUUUH, UBER did nothing wrong, the drunk bitch should have known they'd NINE-tuple her cab fare at 3am when people are typically at the top of their game.'
its also 3 am on halloween when you would have to pay me quite a bit to volunteer to drive people around. pay gets high enough, you start seeing drivers. pay gets too high, my car would be empty. seems reasonable.

2. i think there's some union/cab industry types that are pushing these stories into the spotlight so i wouldn't be surprised if there's something more going on behind-the-scenes to make these stories go viral.
definitely agree

3. lol at people saying a 20-something girl who doesn't make alot of money shouldn't be able to go enjoy a night out with friends just because she doesn't have much money in the bank.
she could have found a friend to drive for free. or not gone so far from home. or not drank too much. or saved more money. or waited for a taxi.

That still depends on the city. Drivers in some cities are not making as much as others for different reasons.
