NOLA MD pleads guilty to illegal dispensing and money laundering

More than 1 million doses of Oxycodone??? That's a heavy handed MD right there! That many Rx's gonna make people turn to Hey-Ron now!

Speaking of Hey-Ron, was listening to NPR earlier this week about the Hey-Ron epidemic. They make is sound like every other person is using this stuff!

I've personally never seen it IRL. Does anyone here use it? Former user? Friend family or loved one use/former user?

Crazy, I was told by a poster here who claimed to be a doctor that the medical community was blameless in this crisis and that it was solely caused by junkies off the street who decided to become addicted

As a physician I will say the actions of a greedy individual do not reflect the teachings of the physician community. And by "medical community" of you include Big Pharma and their actions and influence, then yes the medical community is to blame.

In the 1990's the FDA was telling physicians all over the country these medications, particularly oxycodone and OxyContin were not dangerous and should be prescribed for minor aches and pains. Then over the last 10 years they've reversed those statements. Doctors prescribe what Rx they have available and trust the research to be valid and honest.

That's pretty much what I said in the last big thread about this. I blame the companies like Purdue way above all. they should all be in prison. Straight up Pill mill doctors like this are a minority. Most doctors were misled by a deliberate misinformation campaign from said companies, as you indicated.

But the hack I argued with last time (I'm sure he'll make an appearance ) tried to claim the big companies never did anything wrong or that there were never any lawsuits and then deflected when I linked to several big suits. It was usual OT simple mindedness where a complex problem was reduced to junkies who woke up one day and decided they wanted to be heroin addicts.

"Pain management clinics" are legalized drug dealers. They're dishing out methadone and suboxone like it's candy. We have offices popping up all over Alabama with lines of people waiting on their meds.

I was just coming on to post exactly what some of the others have said. If anyone is to blame, it's the pharmaceutical companies. In the 70-80's they brainwashed doctors into believing there was nothing wrong with "a little pain medicine" and "it's not addictive" and "this is how you help your patients." Doctors believed it (remember, back then there was no reason not to trust big pharmaceutical companies like we now know, that's only been the past several years everyone has realized what's been going on) and then passed this on to the patients. If you went through med school or trained in that era, that's just the way it was. Doctors are not to blame for any of this.
Now saying that, TODAY doctors all NOW know the truth, and if they are still handing out candy for their own benefit, they deserve what eventually comes from it.

You have to have somewhere "they" can go. You can't just cut them off "cold turkey". Suboxone is for people trying to withdraw from addiction to the pain pills. If you take them as prescribed, they work. You have to be willing to quit though. The government (FDA) has stepped in and tried to make it difficult (have to come back every single month, only taking cash, have to have original prescription, no calling it in anymore, monthly drug tests, etc) to help discourage it and decrease availability. You can't just cut these people off cold turkey though, they'd die. It's almost impossible to go to your general internist or PCP and get pain pills anymore, which is a good thing.

I did criminal defense work, and I noticed an uptick in heroin users over time. Lots of addicts.

Exactly. I blame Nancy Reagan. The "Just Say No" campaigns in the 80s conditioned kids(now in 40s) to view cocaine and marijuana as the DEVIL.
TV and afternoon specials made us believe that one joint or one line of blow would ruin your brain and life
But a prescription was just fine b/c a doctor said so

Cocaine isn't remotely close to being addictive/life-ruining/deadly as opiates.
And marijuana is trending towards decriminalization.

Weren't pill mills dispensing pain pills all shut down in Alabama? I heard it was hard to get any pain meds there now. I suppose it's not yet as strict for methadone and suboxone?
