The late 19th century is known as the grand age of invention. Things like the telephone, electric light, and automobile all were invented during this time just to name a few. However, not everything that people dreamed up during that time came to be. Here's some examples.....

Yes, that's device to help a woman wash her titties.

Why eye glasses for chickens never caught on is a mystery to me.

Blinders for chickens were very common in the rural US in the 20th Century.

How often were people accidentally buried alive back then?

I don't know any numbers but I've heard it was not that unheard of for people to be thought dead and then suddenly wake up.

graves have been dug up and when the coffins were opened scratch marks were found at the the top. Live burial was far from unknown in a day of less precise medical practices

Very early in David Letterman's NBC show he went to an inventor's convention in NYC and interviewed a guy from South America who had invented this kind of machine. A hilarious bit, I wonder if the clip is online anywhere...

It's why the Internet was not invented in Soviet Russia:

In Russia, you line up for thread, not line up thread.

Back in the 1500s or 1600s people would drink their liquor in lead cups and the combination would sometimes knock them out for a few days. People got buried alive that way. Not sure if that was still the case in the 1800s or not.
