In 1980, Lake Peigneur was an unremarkable body of water located near the Gulf of Mexico and New Iberia, Louisiana. The freshwater lake covered 1,300 acres of land and was only eleven feet deep.

But it is now a 1,300 foot deep saltwater lake.

Yeah, I Dindu Nuffin on that.

I remember hearing about it, unless you were geographically close to it or a family member was in O&G it wasn't a big deal.

It was certainly dramatic.

It was pre-internet so the gravity of the event and scale was not widely known.

Probably so. It would have been national news had it happened in this day and age.

Evidently my boss's father was working in the mines when it happened. Said they were in water up to their necks when they got out

I work for the company that owned the salt mine. This was on my mind the entire time I went down into the mine under Avery Island.

One of the more impressive YouTube videos I have ever seen.

I was a student at the time and remember reading about it in a newspaper that was in the student lounge in the EE bldg. There was a guy fishing in the lake at the time and he managed to get his boat to the shore before he got sucked into the hole. Must have scared the shite out of him.

Bayou Corne sinkhole happened due to a salt dome collapse.

Not even close. Peigneur had a 150 foot waterfall and a 400 foot geyser.

Just watched the video - that was interesting. I loved that the guy who was fishing said that he now prefers to buy his fish from a store!

This is what I heard.

The operator had gotten a development demand on its state lease covering the lake. It had to drill, and it did not really care where or what for. So it handed it off the project to a brand new PE fresh outta school. He didn't do too good a check on the subsurface situation.

Who knows what the truth is. But this story has the ring of truth.

They referenced the wrong block or section. Not sure if they used an offshore or land reference point.
Surface coordinates are XX feet FNL (From the North Line) xx feet FEL (From the East Line) of a reference point. They used the incorrect reference point therefore their feet North and East placed the rig in the wrong location.

Was it that they used proposed bottomhole coordinates for the surface location?

The history channel video says something about using an improper method of triangulation that gave the drillers the wrong depth/location of the bit
