I thought the ER was the gop health plan?
We have new hospitals opening, here.
Jindal is a monster, People in LA are dying because of him.

. I bet many don't really care cause they think it won't affect them.
Do they think "poor people" are just going to stop going to the ER all together?

Sad! My first job out of college was BRGMC on Florida

I used to walk by that place on my way to the supermarket. It was a National, I believe. It was mid 80s.

I worked in the ER there for 2 yrs, '03-'05. Worked there when Katrina hit. What an experience. Patient after patient being dropped off coming in from NO for days after. We wouldn't know they were coming, many hadn't had their meds in days, couldn't say what they were or state their medical history.
I also feel for OLOL and Ochsner ER staff. They are about to catch HELL

They have built several new clinics is the area in preparation for this. The population just needs to learn how to use a doctors office for help instead of an ER. That ER was losing 1.2 million a MONTH last year.
Feel sorry for all the EMT that will have longer rides to drop off patients.

But what's the current wait time? Check the app

Is there a such thing as a truly private hospital that can refuse indigent patients? Only accepting patients with insurance ?

Exactly. Hate on the "poor people" ERs all you want....but when really bad stuff happens to you....that's exactly where you want to go. The places that are pros at saving people's lives during very critical trauma situations.
Apparently it wasn't good enough. People with insurance in serious situations were being sent to OLOL. LSU partnered with OLOL, which has a massive ER and is very easy to access.
There are ERs operating within inner cities all over the US. Unlike them, BR General was not treating enough insured/paying patients to justify its existence.

Well now all the remaining ERs in BR can feel a lil more like EKL with their patient population. They can now share in the joy of dealing with patients they know they will not be reimbursed for.
Where do you think those patients are gonna go now that both EKL and BRG Mid City ERs are now closed??

It was never a big trauma center like what you see in inner city Memphis or Chicago. It just wasn't attracting enough paying patients to counter the losses. They have been endangered since LSU partnered with OLOL.

Everyone knows what will happen. That's not the point of my argument.
People are acting like this was some kind of super hospital that was absolutely critical for the region. It was not drawing nearly the regional patient volume that OLOL was. They were a neighborhood hospital that was forced to adopt north Baton Rouge after EKL closed.
It sucks for the neighborhood to lose an ER and I absolutely hate to see this happen, but paying patients were just not going there.

Well considering those are both much larger cities than BR, I would hope their trauma centers are larger.

Well I would think having an ER in that area is pretty important. Like one of the articles posted mentioned....time is crucial and now if there is a real life threatening trauma in that area....more time will have to be wasted in transporting patient to another ER. And you know in some situations...every second really does count.
We all understand why it closed.

OLOL has been positioning itself for just that role in Baton Rouge for years.

Not a fan of OLOL. I worked for them and they don't treat their nurses very well(at least they didn't back when I worked for them years ago...maybe they have changed that)

I'm not wild about them myself....but they had the vision and political connections to position themselves to do what Baton Rouge General MC should have.
OLOL has the partnership with the big med school, they'll get funding for being a training center, and they will have the regional draw that Baton Rouge General MC did not. They'll probably end up being a fantastic trauma center if they are not already.
Other than a little longer travel time from north Baton Rouge, I don't think the epic tragedy and health care crisis that The Advocate is making it out to be.

So at some point tonight, will y'all start referring people to other ERs from triage if they will be work-ups? Like at 5 am?
