Marc Ehrhardt, a spokesman for Gusman, said that when someone is placed on suicide watch at the jail, they are supposed to be under constant supervision. This means under supervision "24 hours a day," he said.

The jail suspended a deputy who was charged with observing Goetzee, according to a news release. The deputy, whom the release did not name, left his post for an undisclosed period of time, the release said.

the unfit part was that they didn't have two people there so that if one left, he would still be watched.

No system is perfect and the deputy leaving was the issue, but of course it is placed on upper mgmt for not having a tandem or rotating post.

all in all, is it a $1.7 million mistake?

Apparently a judge or jury may have awarded more, hence the settlement.

Probably?

really?

The dude ate enough TP to kill himself. He was checking out ASAP. All we were doing was paying for him to eat and sleep until he figured out a way to do it.

You all do realize that most people who are suicidal, or even attempt suicide and get treatment do not end up killing themselves, don't you?

Why was the dude in jail? (I didn't read your link)

quote:

William Goetzee, 48, was arrested Aug. 2 outside federal court after he tried to snatch a gun from a federal security officer. During the attempt to get the gun, he told the officer he wanted to kill himself.

He was arrested because outside of the courthouse, he grabbed a gun from a LEO to kill himself. So this guy was clearly suicidal. He should have been sent to a psychiatric hospital via an emergency certificate, which would have been very easy to do, not a jail. Or they could have taken him to jail AFTER treatment at a hospital. Gusman fricked up from the get go.

Come on! How in the hell can tax payers be held responsible for that. That is a hard way to die and anyone that did that to themselves is going to find a way eventually.
