A Florida company has bought almost 1,600 acres in St. Landry Parish for a solar farm.

NextEra Energy closed on its deal last week on a nearly $200 million project that will be installed just east of Port Barre along LA 741, said Bill Rodier, executive director of St. Landry Parish Economic Development. It’s the second company to move forward with a solar farm in the parish this year.

Construction of what will be St. Landry Solar is expected to begin either late summer or early fall and require 18 month for completion, Rodier said.

The project will create over 100 construction jobs to go along with a core management team of 35-45 people behind the project.

Seems like they can fit a lot more in that picture. Do they phase things up and add in between as they grow?

They are trying to lease our ranch down in Texas for $1200 an acre per year for 25 to 30 years. That’s with a 3% annual increase.

I have a buddy that has been working on with a company on a 500 acre lease at $800 per acre per month. That's life changing money, unreal. He has been in the process for almost 8 months, so much red tape.

I guess that would be cool if you had other land but it comes off like you’re giving up your land for the rest of your life to the evil gay nerds

Y’all should’ve bullied them more

The entire place is 540 for us and it’s actually at $1200 now but it started out at $800 per acre and it’s per year not month. I have an uncle and a cousin who have half and not sure what they will do.

I’m worried about when the funding runs out and I’m left with a few hundred acres of Solar panels.

They should build Bocce Ball courts between all those rows of panels...

Nah. They seem content taking up as much space as possible.

The whore got the money. Other parishes have said no after they experienced the reality of destruction of habitat and long-term disposal liability that they figured out only after wasting a lot of money and destroying land.

Dumb whore gonna dumb whore. Sadly the parish president will be gone when the community has to figure this out.

2000 acre farm going in Gonzales county, Owners report 500$ Acre per year leases. Which they are gladly taking as it exceeds running cattle. This is a trend that won't end well.

All I can say is make sure you have all the remediation money bonded and inflation and contingency is being calculated.

These are going to turn into mini superfund sites off over the land.

I am not in the industry but I doubt they will fill those gaps. My guess is it's a combination of airflow (panels produce more when cooler), ease of installation and maintenance, cost of land, production required, etc.

There is a natural gas power plant sitting idle on about 10 acres in Pointe Coupee Parish right now that could produce more energy than the state's largest solar farm.

We are completely stupid with our land use. Solar panels belong on buildings and over parking garages. Not on farmland or anything where people might need to use for housing. I'm not against solar, but I will be if we keep letting this happen.

There's a 3,000 acre one being built by my house. On some of the best ag land in the world. It's asinine.

These solar farms will turn people against solar with quickness. They are horribly inefficient. We need more energy density in south Louisiana.

There is a shortage of land here that doesn't flood. Wasting in on something that should be on top of buildings is a huge mistake.

I think they left space there for maintenance.

Honestly Wal Mart should lease out their rooftops for these things. And people should put them on their homes. But we shouldn't be wasting land on this. They aren't farms. They are powerplants that will have to be decommissioned and cleaned up in a couple of decades.

European countries remove the old panels that don't work anymore and ship them to Africa to "donate solar panels". But all they are doing is shipping waste to those people to deal with.
