So what exactly are you trying to accomplish here? You're arguing something way more trivial and completely unrelated to anything in this thread than I have? And feel free to to have the last word after this post. You're not worth anymore replies.

How about this:

Camry/Accord/etc for the kid.

Whatever the frick your wife wants.

Dedicated track car for yourself that you don't insure or title.

Just make sure your wife's SUV is large enough to tow it to the track

I said that I was divorced over 20 years ago. I've been married again for 19.5 years.

I already posted the two best answers in this thread.

Double or nothing you reply to this too. It's one of your character flaws.

So those numbers add up to you having a side piece during marriage. Unless you marry chicks quickly for the hell of it.

So off topic now. Have fun with your money. You seem fairly ok with your use of it even if I disagree to the percentage of income to spending you do

I can't spend nearly enough time at the track to warrant a separate track car - my back trouble is far too bad. At the most, a few times a year I'll go do a couple 15-20 minute sessions if I'm feeling up to it.

How did you net it out at $130K when I already said it was $150K after taxes?

Obviously your mind is made up. It's be best to let your kid work out the driving learning curve in something else, but worse decisions have been made in the world.

I think it'd be fun if you and your son picked out the exact specs together and ordered the exact one yall want. That would have been really cool to do if I had the opportunity.

Not to wish ill-will on your family, but probably 75% of teenagers are going to have a major wreck within 3-4 years of driving and end up needing a new car.

And you've stongly implied this is a few days per year. Is renting/borrowing a car for these days simply off the table?

Or are you searching for a justification to put a high school kid in a $40K car? Because it's your money. It is not smart to spend the money you're suggesting -

Let me put it another way - if you put $50k of this aside - that will pretty much pay his tuition for 4 years - expenses and such will be on top of that. If he doesn't need it, $50k can $200 to $300 a month spending money, in perpetuity (WG - that means "forever"), and will reward him far more than bragging rights to driving a $40k car to HS.

When you put a kid in a car like that, you're setting him up for failure. Where does he go from that? Up? (in college or fresh out?) Sideways? Nope.

He goes down. But, good luck with your insane plan. I truly wish you the best on it.

The original plan was for him to drive the Volvo for a year, and I was fine with that. But then when we thought about going to just 2 cars with 3 drivers and looked into the insurance savings, it made too much sense. And the Volvo is a piece of crap - it is becoming too costly with repairs to justify keeping it for a year. For at least the first year or so, he'll mainly be driving the Mustang (or whatever we get) to and from school and karate - both of which are only 5-10 minutes away. He doesn't really go out on weekends or anything yet because we are always on the road and he is too focused on training right now to have a life outside of martial arts competition.

WG_Dawg, what do you find so funny about this? What the frick were you doing at age 14 that was so special? His trainer has been making around $60-70K/yr. from age 15-17.

Wow terrible idea putting a new driver in a Mustang GT those newer ones rock over 400 hp. I'm 30 and a pretty good driver and my gfs 300 hp Maxima gets the best of me sometimes.

I can certainly just rent a car when they do the exotics (Ferrari, Lambo, R8, etc.) at the track, but I like having something fun to run around in too. I don't see a problem with buying something nice for a kid who I feel has earned it. When my dad bought me my 280ZX and 300ZX Turbos in high school, it inspired me to work harder. He preached to me about the value of an education and hard work, and I knew that I would have to bust my arse in school to set myself up to maintain that same standard of living. And that worked out pretty well for me. Sure I could put that money aside for college, but I don't have to. When college gets here, I can afford that too (though he'll have plenty enough scholarships to choose from).

What in the ever living frick does his trainer's salary have to do with your bullshite?

Your fat kid is still a fat kid. Only now, he thinks he's a bad arse because pops drops him off at karate class twice a week in his pos Porsche.

You're a tool, and I hope a poisonous snake bites you in the face.
