Actually not a terrible area of Texas if you had to live in Texas...

I could definitely live in a house that size with just the wife.
With kids? No.

But most importantly, a house like that wedged between your neighbors?

Hell no!

In a neighborhood setting like this it would be terrible but on a little land away from folks it could be cool.

100 degree Texas summer day, those things will be seriously struggling.

If they could've put the driveways in the back, in alleys, somehow, it would look 100% better

Buying one is a better investment than renting a 1 bedroom apartment. 660 sq ft is an average one bedroom apartment.

Is it though? You would think you might build some equity BUT the initial sell is driven by the builder, the realtor and probably a bank having a vested interest in getting someone on the mortgage. They will market the hell out of them AND have financing lined up for anyone interested. Re-sells won't have that advantage. In fact there is a re-sell in the development listed right now for 81% of what the new ones are listed for...and its been on the market for nearly 90 days and the price has been reduced 3 times.

Owning also means maintenance of the building and the lawn itself. Can be a lot of money and even with the tiny footprint it requires some work.

Finally owning real estate is an anchor. If you planned to retire in the area and did not think you might relocate for work or expand your family they might make sense...however, they are priced at a point where investors will probably snap them up and will rent them for very little compared to other rentals in the area...which means they neighborhood will be full of lower income renters most likely. Not a great situation if you bought.

Boomers say you're just soft, coddled and spoiled. They didn't splurge on internet and the newest cell phone every year and were able to buy a home before 30.

Also, cheaper neighborhoods always go to crap quickly after the developer moves on.

600 sq ft condos in New Orleans go for $250ish. I don’t know the area but 160k doesn’t seem bad. How much traditional houses go for in that area?

Its a pretty nice area. The tiny homes are priced about $250 a square foot while 1400-2000 square foot 3/2s new construction are selling for around $175 a foot. The latter will qualify for conventional mortgages, I would bet the tiny homes will not...

You can get a brand new house in a nice area of San Antonio for 300k (1700 sq ft x 175)? Sounds good to me.

Also, if the idea is to build cheaply and with a small foot print, why are they detached? Attached row houses of the same size at $75K???? That dog might hunt....

This was my immediate thought. Looks like a crazy waste of space, and you would pay a PREMIUM for that wasted space.

This doesn't surprise me. My parents retired in San Antonio, and it seems like they squeeze as many houses as they can onto tiny tracks of land. They finally wised up and moved to the outskirts

Like it or not this is what the future looks like. Lots of older single childless people will need affordable homes to live in. Welcome to hell.

Depends on what my other options are. Would be better than living in a sketchy apartment complex.

I get it for SF, L.A., Northern VA/D.C., NYC, but land isn't scarce in Texas. WTF is going on here?
