I work in Port Allen and live in Mid-City near Radio Bar. It takes me 10 minutes to get to work and 20-30 minutes to get home. I can walk to several restaurants and bars, a hardware store, a bike shop, a gas station, heck, even a model train shop. Somehow, I get by
If you want to survive in Baton Rouge, just follow the following tips:
1. If you live south of I-10, live on the same side of the river as you work.
2. Live on the same side of I-10/12 as you work.
3. If you work in downtown, it's best to live somewhere north of I-10, West of Airline.
4. Don't live where you have to drive down the stretch of Essen or College between I-10 & Perkins at peak hours.
5. If you work in the suburbs, live there. Otherwise, avoid them. The private school tuition sucks, but the extra 2 hours per day of NOT sitting in traffic will pay for itself over time.
The key is really just to live closer to your place of business and to avoid needing to cross over certain barricade streets like (Airline Highway, Florida Blvd, I-10, I-12, Highland Road (particularly from Lee to Roosevelt). Baton Rouge was built without a plan, so make sure you have one to navigate it.
