Well that’s fair then. The reporting of fully guaranteed needed to be corrected because it had me cursing Loomis

Some background on Saints DE Chase Young's deal: Scans on his neck made it tough to find a suitor. No one would clear him on his physical. The condition was initially found after he had a stinger last year vs. the Browns in preseason.

He'll have neck surgery tomorrow.

The idea in doing the 1-year deal with the Saints, with $5.01 million guaranteed, and $7.99 million in per-game rosters, was to allow for Young to get locked in with a team, go through the 3-5 month rehab from surgery, and have a chance to make the money back.

So new Saints DE Chase Young gets $5.01 million, and the remaining $7.99 million will be tied to him being on the active roster on gameday—which protects the team, in the case that he's not ready to roll.

FWIW, this is probably the biggest per-game roster bonus number I've seen.

This basically sounds like no one wanted to sign him because his neck issue was pretty bad. I guess we’ll see.

good so if you are simply sucking, we can still bench you and play someone else saving our money.

Except we’ll write you a 5 million paycheck while you sit at home when we shouldn’t have signed you in the first place.

People say 5 mill who cares- for a team that has severe cap issues that 5 mil could be used elsewhere in my opinion

The cap issues aren’t a problem for a 1 year deal. If he sucks/can’t play he’ll be gone, if he can play then you get decent value.

You’re right but why even bother with this mess when you can try to sign some other guys or use the money elsewhere?

we can't afford real market edge talent so we're doing some safe gambling.

That is honestly what we should all get out of this signing. Exactly this.

Yea I doubt thats how it works. If he puts on a saints uniform, whether he's 100%, limited snaps or just on the bench sucking gatorade, I bet he'll get paid.

Because he was DROY a few years ago and obviously has the talent. If he can get past the neck issue it could work out, or we can be done with him with the smallest investment possible for a player of his caliber

Appears the language does say Active game day roster; but I am sure his agent also considered making sure the team can't just "pack it in" and have him inactive for coach's reasons and save that money.

You’re not wrong here but it all just seems like a waste of time. The likelihood he even recovers to play or makes an impact is slim to none. Yet seems more like a way for Saints to show they’re making important additions to improve when that really isn’t the case.

NFL teams can activate 48 on game day. Those are the guys ready to play. If he is game day activated he gets paid for that game. Seems like a square deal.

So they found this injury last offseason, why didn’t he have surgery at that time?

It most likely is a waste, especially if you're on the side of the fence that believes we are trending downward.

Wishful thinking: he gets healthy, production improves, he rewards us for taking a chance on him and he signs a friendly long term deal.

This isn’t for optics and that is silly to look at it that way.

It’s an actual gamble that may or may not pay off, I’ll take that any day for a legit DE

Because it happened in the preseason and he had a season to play as well as be part of a superbowl run
