re: Will Smith, 3-4 monster or black and gold history?

think ya got it's $5.5 + salary to keep him. Vet minimum would be $840K. So $6.3mil to stay. But he still can get more than minimum somewhere else IMO.
Don't think so but...
Let me ask you... I have a 32yo DE with declining skills. You'll be obligated to his $14.5mil cap hit. If you can do a new deal with him you still have to account for $5.5mil towards your cap on top of that. Interested?

too small in stature.

I love him. He's no superstar by any stretch, but he definitely doesn't deserve all the criticism he gets. I say B+. He served the saints well.
+1 although I would give him a B

I'll go along with B grade for his career. Not many are responding to the second question though. If every 1st Rder was a B we would be in the SB perpetually.

Sadly for Will I just dont see him being back next year, to much cap space and at his age its not worth to see how he will transistion to the 3-4.
As for his overall career as a saint, B-
Solid production, but not superstar caliper, good leadership and was a good example for the younger players. Even though he wasnt as consistent as we all would have liked, he still was a huge role in the saints success.

I like Will Smith but I think his time with the Saints has come to an end. However, depending on who is hired at DC, the Saints may restructure him and keep him due to his popularity in the locker room and among the coaches and organization. They have been known to keep guys around that maybe aren't playing up to their potential but are good locker room guys and are coming at the right price (i.e. Shanle).

Only thing he could try is to do like Freeney and Mathis and be OLBs. But I dont know well that transition would take place

I'll go with option 4, which is I absolutely think Smith can play in a 3-4, but I want no part of him on this team next year with that contract.

He is listed at 282 pounds. And I would guess that since he has been listed at that from his rookie year, and he clearly has put on weight, he is likely more like 290. Either way, even his listed weight is only 5 pounds lower than Cam Jordan, who is also taller than Will, but perfect for a 3-4.

Do people not know how big Will Smith is? Freeney is in the 260's when it comes to weight, and Mathis is in the 240's. Smith is much bigger than those guys.

Sign him to a one year $5.5 million dollar deal. If he won't do that, then let him go.

That's what I'm saying. Let him stay for a year at the same price as cutting him. If he doesn't want to do that, then cut him and take the hit.
No way he agrees to that. He gets $5.5M from the Saints already. If he goes and signs a deal with a new team for say, $4.5M, then wouldn't he be getting $9.0M total? Or does that just mean the Saints have to pay the first $5.5M of wherever he signs?

Cut him and move on.
I give him a solid B

From what I understand, the $5.5 mil is guaranteed money and signing bonus. So he may have already received that money. It isn't necessarily being paid out over the course of next season. It is just hitting the cap next season.
Say that player A signs a 5 year contract that has a $20 million signing bonus, that $20 million doesn't all hit in year 1. It is stretched out over the course of the contract. $4 million cap hit per year. If the player is cut after 3 years then the remainder of bonus that hasn't hit the cap hits at one time. That would be $8 million still on the cap in year 4 after player A is gone.
I think this is right.

Still doesn't make sense because that in fact is not the only thing he could try. Those guys are smaller and faster than Smith. Why would he drop like 20 pounds to move to OLB, which he isn't fast enough for anyway, when he could stay the weight he is or gain a few pounds to play DE, which better suits him?
Posted on 2/1/13 at 2:29 pm to Peazey
Thanks for that. Yeah, that makes sense. Regardless of how this plays out, the Smith contract is wretched for us.
