I don't completely understand this whole situation, but I think that if we agree to a contract with Butler and the Patriots don't match, then they get our #11 pick, too. Is that incorrect? Because if it's true, then why wouldn't the Patriots just let Butler walk and collect our #11 instead of trading him?

We're going to trade for him. I'll be honest though, if Garrett, Allen, Adams, Hooker and Thomas are all gone before 11, I'll be fine with giving up #11 for him. Now, what I would love is for New England to get the 11th pick and then draft WR Mike Williams or TE OJ Howard just to pull more targets from Cooks.

Are we really contemplating trading the 11th pick for butler? God, I hope not

Most believe a deal was already agreed between Pats and Saints during the Cooks trade talks. Just need Butler to sign tender, so basically he is coming to visit Saints to workout long term contract. Once he sign tender he can be traded. We will not give up the #11 pick.

When this trade actually happens, will 75% of the fan base have no fricking idea what just happened?

We are not going to sign him to a contract until he signs NE's tender and then he is traded to us. Once that occurs, he will get his big money, long term deal.

It's a win-win-win.

NE gets an asset in draft pick(s) for what would have been a cheap 1 year contract.
NO gets a good CB for a reasonable trade price. (Hopefully)
Butler gets the long term deal that he has been seeking and gets to play closer to home.

That's #5. And the most preferable of the options.

this has all been explain in detail 100 times in the other 10 threads about butler, why didn't you read those instead of starting ANOTHER BUTLER THREAD

EDIT - that's why you got all the down votes by the way

In fairness, you're asking him to read 100s of posts over multiple threads with many pages, not really knowing exactly where the info is.

And yet still no one has answered the question. We could just be nice to a fellow Saints fan and answer the question, then also tell him if he wanted to read more about it, read all the other threads as well.

If we give up the 11th overall pick for a former udfa who will be 27 that we're gonna have to give a big contract to the everyone in front office should be fired immediately.

So if the top talent is off the board and we opt to go with a great CB, everyone should be fired? Interesting thinking.

This was an agreed-upon, under-the-table handshake when we traded Cooks to them. Bottom line.

The deal had to be done before the Monday deadline or else Cooks was owed money. Butler was the snag in signing his tender bc he was probably a little butthurt at the time when they signed a trash Buffalo CB just so they didn't have to pay him Revis money. But he's coming around now to being with a team that will pay him like he ought to be in the Saints.

Saints FO will not trade their 11 pick. We have to put this to bed. Dell Demps is not running the show.

That really should have no bearing on anything. You are basically saying you would not trade for a prime Antonio Gates because he was not drafted.

*Im not saying Butler will be an all time great. Just that how he enters the league really makes no difference at this point

Top talent

I wasn't aware there were less than a handful of top talented players....especially when the "top talent " is being identified by amateurs on web sites. You simply do not give a high first round pick AND a huge contract to a guy who will be 32 at the end of it. That's how you become the Cleveland browns. Also Butler is a good player, he's not Revis or Sanders in their primes, he'll he's not even Talib. I mean is it not the slight bit curious that the patriots broke the bank to bring in guy from the Bills but haven't extended butler yet??

Fair enough. He's outplayed his lack of draft position by a good bit. But when you factor in the patriots previous history of plugging in defenders into their scheme and having good success, along with the fact that they got him for nothing it SHOULD give some pause as to trading the farm and breaking the bank for him IMO. Again it's not like he's some lockdown ,elite player.
