Why should the Saints spend a cheap rookie on a 4 or 5 year contract to get Butler one year early? Patriots aren't going to re-sign him next year as a UFA; they've already got Gilmore and Rowe. Why not get your cheap rookie at 32 or 42 and then get Butler next year? Is this all just myopic win-now bullshite?

free agent bidding war... there's a bit of contract leverage with a year left he's restricted and gets a guaranteed long term deal now.

We want butler because he is good and we are bad. We want to be good now, not next year.

because in a trade you sign him to an extended 5 year contract for $10-12m a year vs him hitting the open market where you are in a bidding war with all 31 other teams and to get him you are forced to offer him a $14-15m a year contract to get him to sign

Fair enough. I guess I don't think Butler will take anything less than market value. Especially after getting bitch slapped by the Patriots with the whole Gilmore signing.

Why do you think he'll take that 5 year extension with the Saints? It's not like he'd have time to establish roots here on a one year deal.

First, I'd rather keep 32 and try to draft a future quality starter but if we absolutely HAD to get Butler I'd rather go ahead and do it.

Brees doesn't have that long left and that championship window is closing.

Because we've been in negotiations with him and the trade is contingent on it. Saints are negotiating from a similar position of the Pat's. Earn the tender amount this year and risk getting tagged next year or sign an extension

We need to win this year or we'll be needing to fill the QB position next year

The window won't be open forever.

What you are actually referring to here is leverage? This is why athletes are always complaining about the franchise tag. It isn't because they don't want to TOP 5 pay, it is because there is no long term guarantees.

Right now Butler and his agent know what he will get over the next two years...Not exact but 3 million in 2017 and at most around $12 million for 2018. So 15 million for the next two or 3 million in 2017 and a chance at a career injury with nothing else or 15 million over the next two season and an injury with nothing else.

So the play for the agent is to always to try to get into a multi-year deal with a huge guarantee.

Bottom line if he comes to the Saints it will be a 4-5 year deal worth between 48-60 million with at least 25 million guaranteed.
