We can't trade him because he is a free agent. If anything, this will help us sign him at a reasonable price.

If Teddy was smart, he would make a good long term deal and be happy being Drew's heir apparent/under study, in a stable winning situation for 1-2 years he would have to sit and wait.

So nobody knows the answer to my question. If he becomes a FA and signs elsewhere, do the Saints get a compensatory pick from the NFL in next year’s draft?

Maybe. First thing would be we would have to sign fewer UFAs than we lose (they have to sign elsewhere). This doesn't include traded or cut players (and I don't believe it includes RFAs who were tendered and leave).

Second he would have to get a big contract for his position, and then post season honors and playing time also play a factor.

I wouldn't expect to get more than a 4th IF we play the comp pick game, which we've only attempted once under Payton.

Afraid that he would play poorly, and that would cost the Saints in trade value.

If you think Taysom Hill is the next Saints QB you, well I don’t know what you are. Jeff Duncan is an idiot. The Saints do not know who the next QB is. If Brees were to retire after this season my guess is it will be Bridgewater for a season or two. Taysom Hill is a gimmick not a future starting QB in this league. Stop reading articles written by Skip Bayless wannabes and start watching the games.

What's amazing is there are Saints fans out there that actually thought he could play on the same level as Brees, not ever going to happen.
