Special teams plays a big role in field position and I think we saw a lot of that on Sunday. We were able to overcome it because of some big plays by Cooks. But what's going on here?

On one side we have the best punter who gets us good field position on defense. On the other, Murphy was inactive and we put Byrd back there who fair catches every punt regardless. (And when can we cut him and not get burned by his salary? That was a bitch move!) Then we trot Lewis out who makes a great return...then two punts later Byrd is back there fair catching again. Now I'm not a fan of Murphy at all, but why did we let Spiller go if he could have at least returned punts for us?

Byrd back there to fair catch every single time. Because he has good hands.

Not gonna try to return anything when they are punting at their 40 yard line.

I mean he's literally in there just for his hands and not to return the ball. That's on the coaches

Look at the punter, he's a guy who is as good if not better than ours.

I've seen Andy Lee pin enough kicks to know all you can do is fair catch, which is what they expected. It was one play Byrd could have gotten another 5 yards, other than that they were all inside the 10 and with so much hang time we had no shot at a return

I'm forever hopeful but at this point I could see us listing the keeping of McMahon as a factor in Payton's eventual end. We have has skilled kickers and returners but the blocking and coverage schemes have not been acceptable for me. Special teams on a whole have been a clear part of the decline.

And Byrd Instead of him, put 11 on the line and try for a block everytime. Just let the kicking team down it. The odds of a bounce in favor of the team is higher than Byrd running.

I was at the game, and he could have easily gotten 10 and probably more on his first fair catch. There was no one within at least 15 yards of him when he caught the ball. It was a horrible decision and just unnecessarily conceded field position. We badly lost the field position battle all game long. This is ultimately on Payton.

For the most part, I don't mind a fair catch, but one was ridiculous. We ended up on the 5 yard line punting from our own endzone. In a game of inches, you can't concede 10 or 15 yards.
