They just suck. They don't have the players needed to win another Super Bowl. Remember Carl Nicks and Jahri Evans mauling defenders as Pierre Thomas and Mike frickin' Bell ran like crazy? Well we don't have nearly the talent we had back then.

At the heart of it all is the lack of a quality defensive coordinator coupled with periodic gaps of really bad defensive players specifically at pass rusher and defensive back.
It seems that within a 11 year period Payton could have built a defense to go with his perrinial top 5 offenses.

Horrible scouting dept history and questionable Med staff on Loomis.
Sticking with bad coaches and stale game planning on CSP.
Not firing both Loomis and CSP before now on Benson.

the offense has been top 6 every year under payton. sure we need a better run game like in 2009 but defense had eaten us alive for ages now.

Never recovered from 2012 and the bounty thing.
Up until that point no other coach in the entire NFL had more wins than us since Payton joined the Saints in 06. Not even New England. Payton had a season off and the Saints were bad and just never recovered.
I know it’s been enough time now to be better and that ultimately poor drafting is the biggest reason.. but just pointing out that the Saints lost their mojo after going through that and started having losing seasons since.
