We will not draft an OLB with our 1st rd pick

I posted this on another thread, but I feel it can spark its own topic of conversation...
Every year the "experts" peg us for an OLB, and every year we decline their suggestions. This year is no different. The only one worth taking is Dupree, because he can be an every down player.
I think it will be a G or CB in the 1st (most likely a G since Waynes is the only one worth taking, and I am not sold that he will be that good), and they are targeting one of the MLBs in the 2nd. The 3rd-4th will be OLB and/or G/CB (whichever we don't take in 1st).
Why? Well to start there are plenty of edge rushers in FA this year, and we will sign one at a fair price. With Galette not going anywhere in the near future, we only need one more. This will shore up the position for this season, and it will prevent us from having to use a top pick on it. 3-4 OLB's have traditionally been found in the mid rounds (although the popularity of the position has pushed them into the top 2 lately), so it's a good spot to grab a one trick pony DE that's too small and groom him for the OLB spot. G, MLB and CB are all desperate needs, and they aren't FA rich as edge rusher is this year. We won't be solving those spots in FA, which means we have the draft to rely on for that.

I've been saying for months that we will not draft a LB in the first. Its more than likely going to be an O-Lineman. The only other position that has any chance is a corner. But all the people screaming Edge Rusher and Linebacker will have to just bitch and moan all over this page come draft day because its not happening in the first. Now 2nd round is a different story....

We need to address the OL in the draft. There are plenty of reasonably priced veteran FA LBs that could do just as good as a rookie.

exactly. I think it will be Sherf or Collins in the 1st. The second will be one of the two MLB's (can't recall their names... McKinney?). I know one is expected to go anywhere from mid 1st to mid 2nd, and I wouldn't be surprised if we traded back into the end of the 1st to grab him

CSP will shock the whodat nation and trade out of first round.
I has a know.

Probably why year end and year out LBs are average at best

This has the Jarvis Jones situation written all over it. I'm sure the melt will be in full on draft day.
But never know could surprise me

Yep, there will be more Jarvis tears shed this year.
And look how Jarvis turned out.....

La'el Collins please. He would make a great G for the Saints and have that Louisiana pride that the fans love to see. Looking at the mock draft he is within our rearch. However, he looks to be an OT projection now....not sure how that works with the cap and rookies.

To be fair, Jones was heralded as the #1 overall prospect for over a year before his sudden slip that many on the outside looking in saw little explanation other than a slow 40 and possible work ethic.
As he was falling people still had the thought that he was this #1 overall player. I don't think it is nearly as similar this year unless someone like fowler or maybe beasley drop.
eta: that's in reference to an OLB melt

That doesn't mean anything until franchise tags roll out years later. It's all about the number spot you are drafted at for rookie pay scale/5th year option for first rounders.

Only by the people on this page. (Not Me)

A few weeks before? It was varied.
Months and months leading up to the combine he was the consensus #1 among almost all the experts. As it got closer the Joeckyl /Fisher's appeared at the top.

No 3rd round pick this year due to the Cooks reach.

If we draft a LB in the first it will be a 3 down player. We tried to get Shazier and Mosley last year but didn't want to jump that high.
We aren't drafting a one dimensional pass rusher. If they have a guy that can rush and play the run maybe but he would be more DE like Galette than OLB like Haralson.

I have seriously been wondering if this will be the case. I'm sure it depends on what is available when our pick rolls around, though.

if you cut one of the G's (which they will) then I see them drafting Collins or Shierf, because all the "edge rushers will be off the board.

It's a long shot, but I wouldn't overlook DT. There are a lot of people that are now expected to go top 10 and 2-3 teams will reach badly like they always to; so someone has to drop. I have a feeling Shelton and/or Malcolm Brown will drop.
