Sean P make it? I'm assuming he does but 2 Lombardis would seal it
Posted on 9/18/16 at 11:21 am to Tigeralltheway
He will because of coattails

No, his resume isn't there yet. He needs to win without Brees to seal the deal.

I'd say another SB could go a long ways. He'd be hard pressed for a case as of now. He doesn't need another without brees, just another

He needs to be a more consistent winner + another championship

If Tony Dungy made it he should be a lock

Payton will absolutely make it but it will be a long time and long after Goodell is gone.

If you assume drew makes it, then so does Sean. Their success depends on each other.

Why would Sean Payton make the Hall of Fame? Because of one Super Bowl?
I don't think he does.
I don't think he does.

Wasn't Tony Dungy the first black head coach to win a Super Bowl? Yeah, that's a factor that Sean doesn't have.

I don't think Sean can make it to another SB without an elite QB.

Lol no hes going to have a below .600 record by the end of 2017 unless hes canned first

Objectively, if I had to make a choice today, I'd say no, or at the very least, not for a LONG time.
This is why it's different with Payton than it is with Brees.
1. Brees puts up Madden numbers whether the Saints win or lose.
2. In some ways, Brees gets more success IF the Saints have a bad defense.
3. Payton's reputation is damaged because of the historically bad defenses since he came back.
4. EVERYBODY loves Brees. He lives for good publicity. He'll talk to and give interviews to everybody.
5. Payton has a reputation in the media for being an arrogant prick. And righfully so. He's very condescending and plays favorites. And the writers vote him into the HOF. They hold grudges.
6. Payton's "shadiness" doesn't help him: the Vicodin accusations, the Bountygate suspension, the infidileties, etc.. Brees doesn't have any baggage.
I think if the Saints beat the 49ers in 2011 and reach a 3rd NFCCG (and probably a second Super Bowl), he's an absolute cinch.
I also think Payton is different from Dungy. Dungy has sustained success with two franchises. He's also generally well liked even though the Christianity thing turns some people off. He's also the first African American head coach with a Super Bowl win. He's almost iconic and untouchable. Likability does matter when you're a borderline case.
I'm trying to draw a parallel to another coach (one championship, a couple of great seasons, and a lot of mediocrity/underachieving, relationship with a star pupil), and I can't find one from the past. The closest might be Mike McCarthy. I guess if you're okay with McCarthy, then you're okay with Payton.
