Was Sedrick Ellis a Bust or Just Average?

The days leading up to the NFL draft are upon us again, and the Saints have a good pick selection at #12.
One particular player that comes to my mind right now when thinking back to recent Saints drafts is Sedrick Ellis. In the 08' draft, most draft experts considered him the second best defensive player in the draft behind Glenn Dorsey. When the Saints drafted him, I think it's safe to say most of us Saints fans liked the pick.
When you judge his career though, apart from contributing to the Saints Super Bowl victory in 09', his stats don't really leap out at you:
In 5 seasons with the Saints and 70 games played in:
12.5 sacks
98 tackles
75 assisted tackles
2 fumbles forced, one recovered
So, to me, having spent a 1st rounder ( and a Top 10 1st rounder at that) the Saints ideally should have gotten more production from Ellis. I don't think he is a true bust ( that distinction belongs to Johnathan Sullivan) but I think he was just average for the Saints, not terrible, just not worth a 1st round selection. What do y'all think?

I think he was below average but not a bust. There was talk of him being arguably the best DT in his draft. He obviously never lived up to his draft selection but I never thought he was a terrible player either. His last season here though was pretty bad.

I thought he was pretty strong early on in his career but by the time he was done it was obvious his heart was not in football. He was dreadful his last season or two.

Sedrick Ellis was a bust. The only reason he's not considered that bad a bust is because he had Vernon Gholston drafted in front of him and Derrick Harvey behind him.

No he's a bust. You pick in the top 10 and you expect to get at least double those numbers. Also, he had zero pro bowls. We gave up a third and swapped first with the Pats(they picked 3 spots later and got Jerod Mayo). We all know the story, came to New Orleans and got fat.

Was on Super Bowl team.
Not a bust.
Not a bust.

Completely a bust. Out of the league as soon as we cut him and we held on to him for 2 years when he should have already been out.

I used to work for his ex-gf and she basically told us he packed it in when he got his $33 million dollars.

He was ok, but got worse every year. He made a bunch of money his first contract and decided it wasn't worth playing for an earn it deal.
I just think Sed Ellis didn't love the game.

Didn't we trade up to get him also??

played good for his first 3 years and then turned into a big fat nothing.

I thought the selection would equate to the Ricky Williams vs Edgerrin James scenario.
Dorsey (like Ricky) was the popular pick, but I thought Ellis would outplay Dorsey much like Edgerrin became an all-pro while Williams never lived up to the HOF hype.
Instead, both Dorsey and Ellis were disappointments.

agree with much...
-smart enough guy to know you can retire after one good contract.
-enough real physical skills for up to journeyman to be able to stick
-cashed out and went home
For a #7 overall, minor bust.
Ya could do worse, ie Fried Chicken Sullivan. THAT was a POS. Not even interested in making a roster.

Agree with the people who say he was a good player early and he just didn't give a shite after 2010. 108 tackles and 12 sacks his first 3 years (decent for a 4-3 DT). 0.5 sacks his last 2.
His career after the left New Orleans describes him to a tee. Signed with the Bears and then didn't even show up for camp and retired.
I would argue that he is absolutely not a bust. If you look at his career arc, he is basically Robert Meachem minus Meachem's first two wasted years. Would you call Meachem a bust? Well, definitely in San Diego but he probably did enough in New Orleans to not be called a bust. I mean, he wasn't Lindsey Scott or Larry Burton. THEY were busts.

I will never understand KC selecting Dorsey. The Chiefs were a true 3-4 defense at the time and Dorsey played solely on a 4-3 with us. I remember Kiper saying something like Dorsey had never played 3-4 in his life. The Chiefs were shocked and shaken when he didn't work out and it's like... fricking duh!

he didn't live up to the 7th overall pick, but he wasn't a bust. His first 3 seasons were solid.

He wasn't a bust because he did play out his contract and contributed to the team.
I'll say he was a very disappointing player based on where he was selected. I actually ran into his parents in Las Vegas in 2012. They were the only people in the restaurant watching the game decked out in custom Sedrick Ellis jerseys. They blamed everything on Payton and his coaching, and Ellis having no help to do his job. I just smiled politely.

Terrible logic, then again this is how some of you think. But but but '09

Jonathan Sullivan was a bust.
Sedrick Ellis was disappointing but not an absolute bust.
