Mickey Loomis unconcerned if teams upset about off site prospect interviews

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis isn’t sweating the fact that quarterback Drew Brees is unsigned beyond the 2017 season and he’s equally unconcerned about any feathers the team might be ruffling at this week’s Senior Bowl.

Mike Florio reported on Tuesday that some teams are upset that the Saints are taking prospects participating in the game off site in order to conduct interviews with them because the travel time involved cuts down on their availability for other teams. Loomis said the team is only taking players a block away in order to simulate the conditions in place for interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and that he’s unmoved by word of displeasure.

“I don’t care,” Loomis said, via Mike Triplett of ESPN.com. “That’s awesome. … I look at it like we’re hustling.”

There’s nothing in the Senior Bowl rules barring teams from taking players elsewhere for interviews. That could change in the future if enough teams are upset about it or we could see them take a page from the Saints’ book when it comes to hosting their own conversations.

We have our first mildly interesting story to emerge from Senior Bowl week.

Per multiple sources, the Saints have been taking Senior Bowl players off site for interviews. This has been rubbing other teams the wrong way because it takes time to get the players off site, interview them, and bring them back. With limited total time for the interviews, that makes it hard for every team to interview every player it wants to interview.

As one source explained it, many of the players become confused when they are driven away, but they don’t know to say no.

The Saints aren’t breaking any rules, and some of the blame should go to the folks running the Senior Bowl for letting it happen. Regardless, teams aren’t happy about it, and if that’s the biggest problem to emerge from the week in Mobile, Alabama, it’s not a bad week.

Remember these quotes:

"We've got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore's head. We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways."
"Kill the head and the body will die. Kill the head and the body will die."

Coach speak in every locker room, and yet, bountygate.

The Saints wined and dined last year with the player interviews. For it to be a problem, now, is interesting.

I say, f the other teams.

I like that the Saints aren't breaking rules but other teams are butt hurt. They found what is akin to a market inefficiency and are exploiting it to their advantage. Well done, Saints.

It isn't even cheating.

It is not against the rules.
