Peat is not going to start over Strief or Armstead this year barring injury

A rookie got schooled by a seasoned vet his first practice of training camp. Nothing to be shocked about here. Peat will be fine.

Point taken but he got schooled by Stephone Anthony who is also a rookie.

I don't really agree with that. He got his arse handed to him by Greg Hardy in his first ever NFL start, but after that he was very solid to the end the season and in our couple playoff games.

He didn't even start until someone got hurt. We are complaining about someone after one practice. What a joke.

Look this guy is looking bad against d linemen that will not make the team. You don't pick a project ol WITH A TOP 15 DRAFT PICK. BOTTOM LINE! As of right now it is early but so far This is not good.

Peat will be rotated in slowly as a backup to Strief and possibly for Armstead this year. I don't think the Saints signed him to play guard not at that high a pick anyway

I wouldn't call Peat a project. It was a curious pick based on our personnel needs, but I wouldn't say he's a project. SJB was a project, one that failed apparently.

to be fair, the optimist peat posts in this thread are basically calling him a project

So he was a project that is only given one season? That doesn't really make sense.

I was one of the loudest anti-Peat posters on this forum when we picked him. I don't think he's going to be a project. I think he'd be an adequate RT this year if we threw him to the wolves. My problem with the pick was that he's not going to be better than Strief or Armstead any time soon.

Even though many Saints fans have no idea, Strief is one of the best RTs in the game. He hasn't given any indication that he's falling off, either. He is under contract for 4 more years at a pretty reasonable rate.

Armstead is about an average (maybe a bit above) LT despite being a really young "project." He'll only get better. He's under contract for dirt cheap for two more seasons.

If the Saints thought that he was easily the best player available (I didn't), then fine. But that's not an efficient use of assets. Strief's contract makes him very easy to cut and OK to trade next offseason. That's still going to result in ~$3m in dead money. Peat probably needs to be the best RT in the league to cover the opportunity costs. Though if he can be an above average LT, we probably could get a nice return for Armstead.

And for those bringing up the word "guard", Peat doesn't have the build of a guard (6'7 would make him one of the tallest, if not THE tallest in the NFL). Payton has already stated that he does not consider Peat a guard. That's not happening on a regular basis.

I don't think they drafted him to play G either, but the option is there if he cannot cut it at T. It is widely known that the Saints wanted Danny Shelton, but when he came off the board, Peat was the safest pick. If he doesn't pan out at T, the conversion to G is easy, and it will be a need sooner rather than later.

May not be ideal for a 13th pick, but Peat is a hell of an insurance policy. Tackles can go down in a heartbeat. Having Peat step in for Strief, or Strief slide over to LT for small or big injuries is huge.

yes, because the Saints don't put a premium/go big at G at all...

I agree with a lot of your post, but this part is incorrect imo. Peat has the lower body and the leverage to be devastating at G. Is he the prototypical 6'2 320 lb G? No, but Drew Brees isn't the prototypical QB either.

Pump the breaks

He looked better today and is switching to another side. All rookies will have a rough day or 2 in camp.

A future decade starter at either T spot is well worth a first. God help us if we would've had to thrown in bryce harris if armstead and or strief got hurt this season.

6-7 seems huge for a guard in our offense

Armstead struggled his first season.

Armstead was sensational outside of his 1st game. He gave up something like 1 pressure in his last 3 games, including @Eagles and @Seattle in the playoffs. That was also at LT.

But I do agree that there is a learning curve for a rookie tackle

He got abused, then really turned the corner. I think Armstead has all pro ability. He has legit speed, and can actually pull which is rare as frick for an LT. That said, he wasn't all world out of the blocks.
