quote:

Cowboys free-agent linebacker Victor Butler will continue his visit with the New Orleans Saints on Friday after arriving in town on Thursday.

The mutual interest between the Saints and Butler has been high during the free-agent process. Saints Coach Sean Payton mentioned outside linebackers, plural, at this week’s NFL owners meetings as one of the uncertain position groups that keeps him awake at night.

Butler visited with the Steelers nearly a week ago during his first free-agent visit. But Butler, who turns 26 in July, left Pittsburgh without a contract. Playing for former Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is the obvious connection for Butler to New Orleans.

If Butler leaves New Orleans without a contract, visits with other teams would be likely for Butler.

The Saints are thought to remain high on former Eagles and Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha as well. Yet the process remains in a bit of a holding pattern as the former All-Pro defender continues to weigh his options after visiting New Orleans and San Francisco.

Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis both said during the owners meetings that the decision remains Asomugha’s to make. So the door seems open until Asomugha makes a choice.

highlighted part of the rotoworld response I liked best-

Asomugha is apparently deciding between the Saints and 49ers, and isn't known to have made any other visits. His drawn out decision-making process suggests neither team is offering beaucoup bucks. Asomugha will likely settle for an incentive-laden, one-year deal.

I'll be honest. I really want Butler to sign with us.
Besides William Moore I think this is the FA I want the most this offseason. It's right up there with getting Lofton last year as far as I'm concerned. :fingerscrossed:

Butler will sign. I have no doubt, he is ours.

Don't know about Nnamdi and I'm not sure that I care that much at this point. A part of me would be thrilled to have him, especially if he has a lot left in the tank. But I'm not sure that he does, and after getting Lewis I'm starting to feel like we could better spend our money elsewhere. I'm conflicted, but Loomis, Payton and Ryan know what they are about.

Does anyone think that if we don't get Nnamdi that a CB like Xavier Rhodes at 15 is a lock?

I agree, but I also want Asomugha. If we get those two I think we're in a great position to go BPA in the draft and that could include an offensive player. I think this is best, because you never want to reach for a guy based on need.

nope

We should trade down if he's the best available defensive player at 15.

I'm not predicting stardom but I was prolly the earliest pimper of him. The RR knowledge of him is important. he has scheme familiarity and RR already knows precisely his skills and how to use him. I love the age and upside potential. Much like Keenan Lewis in that regard.

Let's use Shanle as an example of what I might expect. He was a 7th Rd roster filler doing nothin in STL & Dallas, He comes here and is a starter for a few years. Maybe not even average but he was a starter. Extrapolate Butler... 4th rd pick that was the most NFL ready out of the boys draft in '09. He's been solid every time he gets reps. But he was stuck behind 1st Rd Anthony Spencer. I'd go so far to say if it was the Saints camp Butler might have been named starter over Spencer in 2012. Not all teams go by "how they perform" over their draft position as strongly as the Saints. Spencer then happens to have his breakout year finally (a contract year coincidentally). I think Butler coming in and being a solid All pro performer would be no surprise at all.

The Nnamdi situation reminds me of Lofton last year. He visited and left without a contract. We signed Hawthorne in the interim and we all thought that we were done with Lofton. About a week later, Lofton is signed and we are happily surprised. I think Nnamdi signs soon.

Wow, you're that high on Butler? I hope you are right? I consider Lofton a proven commodity whereas Butler is an unknown.

His staying a 2nd day has to mean that they were close and are negotiating. If they were far apart and our offer couldn't come close to whatever he heard from the Steelers/Jets/whomever else he visited, I don't think he'd be here. People were pretty meh on the Ryan hire, but he could be a big reason that we sign Butler/Asomugha/both.

it's not quite like college recruiting but being a boss that peeps wanna work for is a big deal. Can you imagine any receiver playing for some of these no count QB teams that could get a chance to go to the Saints? They'd hop on it. The D being that way starts with the DC after the HC.

I like this a lot as well.

Brees has never ruled out a restructure, and doing so next offseason (in part) to extend a NA who reverts back to form in 2013 seems a logical time to do so.
