Two More Cents

I have had some decent draft predictions for the Saints historically. This is the first time I have ever predicted the first two picks. Are the top 3 picks absolutely perfect for value and need? Maybe not, but it is damn strong.
Rankins- I'm with the many analysts that stated it as possibly a perfect meeting of value and need. Simply the most disruptive penetrator inside in this draft. I will have to dig back in history to remember a DT tandem that excited me as much as the prospect of Rankins and Fairley.
Thomas- Again an incredible match of need and value. Yes, Brees can make a 900yd receiver out of players like Willie Snead. Remember when the Pats had their receiving corp diminished and you could see the drop off in Brady's performance? The same is being avoided here IMO. Colston did not have an incredible last season but he still was an imposing presence in the scheme. Coleman has potential going forward but he did not look ready to step up to the next level. Penciling in a 1000yd season for a 2nd Rder makes for a good choice
Bell- This trade up was for screaming value. Nice to be able to pluck him from the Panthers grasp too. I'm still hoping for Byrd but he has been a bust so far (even if injured). Bell is a ballhawk that has started 28 games.
Many have whined about the Saints propensity for project type picks. I see these as the most game-ready selections in the Payton era possibly. They might have to wave the magic wand with some off the wall picks late. This draft earns an A now regardless of the next picks.

I think we have three players that will be around for awhile, which is all you can hope for.

I really like all three of the picks. All three areas of need and all guys who will get on the field immediately. That's all you can ask for in the first couple of rounds and we nailed it.
D-line need - obvious
WR - we were down To Cooks, Snead, and Coleman. We needed an infusion of talent there and would be screwed if Cooks went down.
S - the need here wasn't as obvious to me before the draft, but I love the pick. Vaccaro improved last year but Byrd has been a bust and Bush left. Bell can help in coverage to allow Vaccaro to play in the box or near the LOS as a nickel much like he did in 2013. Three safety sets are almost the new standard in the NFL.

Couldn't agree more! All 3 can and will come in a play immediately in some capacity!

Exactly, the other thing I loved about the Bell pick is we snatched him up from Carolina.

Would really be nice if Vadal could fall to us in the 5th. Would address a need and some value.

That's what I'm hoping as well. I wouldn't hate giving up a 5th and 7th to make sure we got the G we liked in the 4th. Just feel like we really need another option there.
I know that'd only be 4 picks, but you'd be getting 4 immediate starters with every draft pick.

Will have to be a little more than a 5th and a 7th. This year's 5th and next year's 4th or 5th (remembering that picks a year latter a valued down a round).
Likely we would be trading a 4th next year for one this year and losing a 5th rounder. I'd be okay with that if they have a strong conviction on a guy.

Honestly, I wish we would call up Dallas and ask what they want for Ron Leary. If we acquired him, this would be the best off-season since maybe 2009.

That wouldn't be a bad idea either

My choice would be Louis Vasquez. Why is he still on the street at age 29?

cant we cut byrd after this year?

Yeah I'm thinking FA guard is much more likely at this point than forcing a late guard pick that is unlikely to start.
