Another clear out option when Cooks is gone.

Maybe if:

- He still has his speed. If not, no point and speed can go quick.
- He's not a dumb arse.

Skill players who can't process the playbook don't play here for long. See Meachem taking so long to see the field and Spiller, etc.

That's why I think there's zero chance we sign Cordarelle Patterson - no way that dude could understand the playbook.

Usually I'm against these just because Smith has lost a step but the dude is a class act and I think Michael Thomas, Willie Snead (and Cooks if he's still here) could all learn a thing or two. I'm honestly at the point where I would make all 3 spend a week with Marques Colston, god I miss him.

I honestly didn't watch much if any 49ers last season, so I didn't know his speed had dropped off. He is only 28 and was lightning fast, so I figured he would still be an effective deep threat. Not for the $10M he was making, but for less.

As you stated, the reason I would consider Smith is that he is perrenially a Walter Payton Man of the Year candidate and a class act. Check out his fairwell to San Fran:

Torrey Smith Farewell
quote:

I would like to say thank you to the @49ers for allowing me to wear red and gold for the last 2 seasons. It didn't go the way we wanted it to but I'm thankful for the relationships I was able to build. I had a great time in the locker room with my teammates and equipment staff. I'd like to apologize to the fans because you didn't get to see me at my best. Regardless of what other may think, I believe the 49ers organization is first class and is heading in the right direction. I would like to say thanks to my man Dan...Bob..and all of the PR staff for showing love to my family. Furgie, the training staff and doctors for taking care of me. The community relations team is arguably the best in the country! I appreciate you all for allowing us to be a part of it and I will continue to support any way I can...it's a million other folks I need to thank...from Hannah to Joanne..T Lloyd and Lil Kym...but I don't have enough time. Jed keep up the great work I know how important it is to you to succeed. All the best to my boys and the new regime. One final shoutout to the janitors and the chef's y'all were always great to me. Good luck next year. Stay Blessed!!!

Smith just led the league in yards per rec in 2015. He's been stuck in the worst pass O in the league in SF for two years

Hes a SP type guy. Desean Jackson will break the bank for a team while smith can do the same thing for half the price. Brees would make him a stud

I'd like him but he might cost MORE than DeSean Jackson in the total contract for his age.

Not added to this calculated cost list yet-

I think anyone with football smarts can see it wasn't him but the team and scheme.
Rotoworld-
The move clears $4.675 million in cap space, a number that would increase to $7.875 million if designated as a post-June 1 cut. Smith was a colossal bust in San Francisco, catching 53 total passes for 930 yards. It exposed the limitations in Smith's game, but his struggles were more about the 49ers' staggering incompetence on offense than anything else. The sides were simply a disastrous match. Still only 28 with some of the league's purest speed, Smith won't take more than a few days to find a new home

maybe the reason his speed dropped off is because he was on the 49ers and there was nobody there to throw him the ball.

lets face it, your surroundings do have an affect on you and being in that shite hole situation last year maybe he was just trying to do his job and not get hurt hoping something changes for him or the team.

lets bring him in and see him workout, its worth looking at

just saying a little bit of his stats changing might be him feeling nothing would come of him killing himself out there going full speed.

he seems too young to be "slowing down" so I think his speed is still there and it was just something else

Saw this thread. As a live long 49er fan who begrudgingly watched all the 49er games last year, here are my unsolicited thoughts on Smith...

Positives
-He has not lost his speed. Simply faster than most defenses.
-Gabbert/Kap simply could not hit a moving target past 20 yards.
-He was open plenty of times while being the only real threat on offensive outside of Hyde when healthy.
-He is a class act all the way.

Negatives
-Run blocking was meh.
-Really only excelled at running deep routes.
