The Saints All-Time record with Benson as owner is 239-224 and 7-9 in playoffs, 1 Super Bowl Victory, and 10 playoff appearances. Prior to Benson 78-176-5 and 0 playoff appearances.

Could he be one of the best/most overlooked owners in the game? I think so.

I'd rank him just below Georgia Frontiere, Bud Adams and Art Modell. He was denied his place among that pantheon by the NFL in 2005.

Compared to John Mecom, Benson is Jerry Buss.

Considering what he inherited it's outstanding. Went to Playoffs 4 of 6 years early on. He hired Loomis. He hired Payton. He paid Brees. Never been afraid to open up checkbook and pay players.

Man, you have to give Benson as much credit for Brees as Loomis. He's the guy that agreed to write the checks for a guy no one knew would ever be 100%.

Benson's actions after Katrina were despicable...but he came back and wrote the check to buy the Hornets (Pelicans) and kept them here.

Were they really despicable? That's a true business mindset, he had no clue how the city was gonna turn out and the saints are part of a multi-billion dollar industry. That is a lot of invested money into something that no one was even sure would pan out so he made a plan B.

not to mention he was trying to make money. what better way to make money than to dangle a carrot to san antonio and make them think the saints were going to move?

As long as I can remember if you can play you get paid cap permitting of course. One word arguments hold up real well.

How many businesses/people left after Katrina? A ton. Do you quiver with rage when you drive past a Ruth's Chris? They bolted, and so did many others.

So he wavered. He has that in common with probably 95% of the people who had significant business investments in the city of New Orleans.

Owners don't play. The only owners that should grt ANY credit are in leagues without hard caps.

Where would we be without Mickey Loomis?

It's hard, very hard, for me to forgive Benson for always threatening to move the team to LA, asking for more money from the city/state without opening his books, not paying players (Morton Anderson, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills, Quinn Early, LaRoi Glover, Joe Johnson, etc.) and his comments after Katrina. Also, friends in the car business say he was a total douche to his employees.

It seems he's tried to buy a lot of goodwill later in his life. I'm thankful for that.

(And he didn't pay Drew Brees. That comes from Loomis spending money under the salary cap from the organization. It's not like he wrote a personal check or anything.)

Anyway that's just my opinion.

I agree with you 100%. Can't add anything to that.
