Is everything we knew of preseason strategy from the 4 game schedule completely gone now? Has the softer practice requirements enforced on all teams across the NFL changed how head coaches strategize going into the 1st official game?

In the old 4 game preseason, the preseason was used to give the starters time to play as a team, and give the coaches feedback on what is working and not working in the practices. Now it seems like the coaches are preferring to go into the first game hoping that what they see and coach in practice shows up on game day.

I get that coaches do not want to lose players to injury but they do not get hit or deliver hits in practice, do not take and deliver game hits in preseason, and some do not even practice in preseason. It seems like this makes players more prone to being injured in the early season games when they and their opponents are going at it at game speed and game intensity. Heck, the OL and DL do not even practice with their game helmets now, what happen when they now take game shots to the helmet without the softer exterior shells?

The new format just makes it more clear that the NFL is more about the appearance of game competition while they move to just providing entertainment under the guise of a football game.

There should only be 2 preseason games. It’s a waste of time.

Was about to post the same. I think it is the way now unfortunately. And I have no doubt the NFL will extend the season by even more games in the future.

I hate to say I noticed it more because of Fantasy Football but I did. I do/did well because I follow camps a lot and try to get peeks and intel on who is doing well or pushed down the depth chart. This year there really is very little to be learned unlike past years and its due to very little playing time and the caution vs injuries.

The game will never stop changing I suppose.

I could see just joint practices in camp as the nf$ expands regular season games.

I think you could make a case for 0, 1, or 2.

I don't see the point in having 3.

LMMFAO

Talk about people not knowing anything about Football. How do you find new players and the Pierre Thomases of the league. Pre-Season football. it should have remained 4 games. Not give the bitch vets a pass, Roster spots are earned not given. now the young players don't have a chance to prove themselves in game situations. Practice doesn't prove as much as a game.

I would say one or zero. The teams get more out of these joints practices than they do a real game. Go to one game that is tied into joint practices with the team you will play. You could even shorten training camp a week or 2. Add another regular season game. players get a reduced training camp and owners get another game. Its a win for both sides.

The NFL is as much about injuries as talent and scheme.

Thomas stays healthy in 2020 and I think the Saints win the Super Bowl.

Last year if Winston plays all year the Saints probably finish 11-6 or better and win the division.

You can't win the super bowl in August but you can lose it.

agreed, they want the money which is why we have those games, but if thats the only reason to have them then go to zero games and add 2 more regular season games so its a 19 game season and be done with it.
have all the practice joint scrimmages you want and loosen up the restrictions on training camps to allow things to shake out more complete there and then start playing.

with 19 game season losing a few early games is no big deal

colleges have been playing just fine without any problems and no preseason games for over 100 years but you think the NFL isnt able to do the same thing colleges do

That old school mentality is stupid and good riddance. Coaches know who can play and these are grown men on the feild. At this level it is about limiting unnecessary hitting and getting players ready for Sunday or whatever day they play on. On most teams there are 5-6 guys trying to get a roster spot, 2 or 3 legit position battles, and it is important for the rookies. Though some hitting is necessary to get players in game shape it is smart to keep it minimal. Take our QBs for example Winston is coming back from injury, every day matters for him to get healthy hitting is unnecessary for him until week 1. Andy Dalton went 5 for 5 with 51 yards and a TD, it is clear he is the backup and has a good grasp on the offense why play him anymore? Backup QBs matter now it is wise not to get them hurt and obviously on this team there is no competition. What is playing Kamara in a pre season game going to do? Everyone knows what he is capable of.

2 preseason games, 18 regular season games, 2 bye weeks, one of which must come before a Thursday night game.

That fixes a lot of issues.

I don't think it is a fair way to judge an individuals talent when he is paired up with 10 other scrubs at the same time. Your instinct may be to cover another guys poor play and make yourself look bad in the process. If you have already determined in practice that a guy is not going to make it then why waste time with him in preseason? I agree with others - at best 2 preseason games with starters playing along with a few that honestly have a chance to make the roster.

NFL has about 80 players on IR to start the season. They trying to eliminate that though this new process. The starters are not game ready until few games into the season.

I would not be surprised to see exactly that within the next couple of seasons. I believe it was Peter King that said this scenario had been brought at the owner's meetings more than once.

I think they should just do away with the preseason entirely. The coaches already know who will make up the vast majority of the roster, and they probably learn more about the bubble players daily on the practice field than they do with the small number of preseason snaps they get, in the grand scheme of things. You could probably do away with preseason and have two joint practice schedules. Say the Saints spend a week in Houston, week in Green Bay, then come home for the final week or two prior to the opener.
