The Byrd Outlook

I rarely find anything from Bleacher Report or any of the other fan based sites of much interest. This one sums up the history and outlook of the Byrd signing very well IMO.
What's your outlook? I'm a perpetual hoper so one more year for him to bounce back to his prior form. More realistically, if he ain't gonna make it I hope Vonn Bell gets more reps more sooner than later.
worth a read here

even if he plays well this year, it'll be tough battle with mr. cap space.

I don't have any expectations. Last year seems like it would have been the year to bounce back. Maybe another year removed from the major injury will do it, but I'm not counting on it.
He would cost 6.5m to cut this year. And save 3.7m if cut next year.

I still don't understand why we signed Byrd.
I didn't like it from the moment I heard we were looking at him.
No pass rush.
Awful defense.
Oh, I know!
One of the highest paid safeties in the league will fix this defense!
Everyone knows defenses are built from the secondary forward.

I felt he was coming on at the end of last year. To me it seemed that he was hesitant upon his return and was fearful of another injury. Once he got over this, he played "decent". Hopefully with another offseason of recovery, he can at least raise his level of play to something close to what his contract implies.

When you have no pass rush, are played as a one safety over the top and your other S is Kenny V. it's hard to have any expectations. He's being used wrong here and he has no help at all. I guarantee you if he left the Saints tomorrow and went to another team like Patriots he'd be all-pro again. I watched him a lot in Buffalo and I can tell you the Saints are not using him right when he was at his best. In any event, it's not going to matter because the entire defense is bad. Don't even know if Keenan Lewis can play at a high level anymore with his injuries.
He needs to be in a more similar role that KV is in now where he can roam more and use his instincts instead of lining up 20 yards off the ball and covering BOTH sides of the field like Earl Thomas. He's not that good and nobody is. Problem there is when KV is sitting in a traditional S role he sucks balls. So in hindsight, maybe the draft pick wasn't so bad if they plan to play KV in nickel and then line 2 S in the back and maybe giving Byrd a more robber role. Still don't understand picking up the 5th year option on KV who has been average at his best past his rookie season. That's a lot of money to give a guy who had another year to prove himself. IMO, S was a massive need on this team and arguably one of the biggest. It just wasn't bigger than needing a pass rush and guard help.

When the Saints signed Byrd we had a top 15 defense with a great pass rush combo. They probably felt an all-world safety would put it over the top. For whatever reason the Saints decided to suck bad in Ryan's second season.

Jairus Byrd should win the Dan Morgan award for reliability.
If this was the NBA he'd be named Eric Gordon.

another great roster move by Loomis and Payton. Ran off malcom jenkins in his prime, replaced with a more expensive and less talented bum. This team is a wreck saints fans, get off of the 2009 drugs

That was an anomaly.
Saints under Payton have averaged around 20th.
In hindsight, he shouldn't have done a damn thing.
