Good article. I suggest reading it.

But in football, winning is not just about talent. It’s about so many other things that can’t be tabulated, especially by those outside the meeting and locker rooms. It’s about preparation. It’s about mental toughness. It’s about discipline. It’s about carrying out your assignment, as boring as that may be. It’s about being a professional.
quote:
Brees might as well have just said, “We have a bunch of soft quitters who enjoy being football players more than actually doing the work required.” And there’s no bigger indictment of a professional football program than that.
quote:
Payton knows how to run a team. Sometimes that’s not good enough if you’ve picked the wrong players.
quote:
Galette talked about “better” and “putting up numbers” like that’s all it takes to play winning football. Strief went to Twitter to make his opinion loud and clear.
“[Vilma] and [Will Smith] are the benchmarks for leadership and professionalism,” Strief wrote. “Blessed to have been their teammate. #walktogetherforever”
New school take. Old school take. Guess which one has a Super Bowl ring?
quote:
The Saints (5-8) are what their record says they are: losers.

Wow, this feels dead on to me.
Gallette should have been on Twitter yesterday apologizing to Vilma

I didn't read this article, but the defense lacks leadership and aspiration. Lofton is a professional and great player, but I don't think he's a leader. Not the same way Vilma or Brees is. This defense needs a leader in a bad way.

I think that is what we miss most about Harper and Jenkins.
It isn't that they were good, b/c they weren't. It was their defense, their huddle, etc. I don't think Lofton demands the same accountability and Vaccaro hasn't earned it yet.
You can tell Keenan Lewis is annoyed by Vaccaro's mouth

Could not agree more. Gallette will have a hard time digesting the crow.

Vilma was a natural leader. He just had "it". Lofton is not that kind of guy. He and Lewis are good players. They just aren't "leaders". Not being negative about them. Just stating my opinion.
Posted on 12/8/14 at 2:15 pm to Suntiger
And that's totally valid. I definitely believe that there are natural leaders. I also believe that some people can learn how to be effective leaders.

Lofton is the best backer we have. Period. To get rid of a solid player at a position of complete ineptitude is idiotic. Now they could go after a good MLB in the draft with the expectation for him to do that, and you could always shift Lofton to the strong-side. But I really have no interest in the draft at this point of the year.

I think Lofton has some great leadership qualities. I just get the feeling Vilma commanded the room. Vilma could tell some cornerback to "eat that dog shite right there," and Corey White would have brown teeth with grass bits sticking out.

I think Galette might actually be done as a Saint. Like REALLY done. I can't find a single fan among the circle of Saints fans I know, who will say ANYTHING good about him after the whole Twitter debacle and especially after Sunday's game. People who genuinely love the team are really ticked off about him. There is an older, mellow, perpetually drunk gentleman who sits on the end of my row, he's probably been in that seat in the Dome since Day One, and he's completely fed up with Junior. And in a totally different, worse way than I remember him being kinda fed up with Will Smith when he was underperforming...this was way worse.

That does sum up this saints team. Talented losers

That's a great article and hits it on the head.
However, I think a lot of you on here are trying to put all of this on one player like Curtis Lofton or Junior Gallette. I think a lot of you fail to realize that it's not a problem with only one of the players not being a leader. Lofton being more or less vocal is not going to change the way Bryce Harris comes to work. It's about something fundamentally and culturally wrong with the players we have brought into replace Jenkins, Sproles, Harper, etc.
This team, from top to bottom, is lacking players who want to thrive in the NFL. To thrive in the NFL, it takes determination, hard work, incredible focus, etc. Just look at Drew - he is who he is because he's detailed. We don't have that with these players or some of the coaching staff. Look at Greg McMahon - Do you think he's as detailed as Sean Payton? frick no...and his units show that.
This team has all the makings of being a successful team in this league but they need to work at it just as Peter King said.

Well I feel Lofton is a good leader but on defense you really need several leaders. Secondary has none and Dline doesn't have a true leader. I would figure veterans like Bunkley, Hawthorne, and Lewis were leaders but they aren't. Lewis is a great player and has said himself he needs to be a better leader.

yea I thought Galette was going to become a leader this year.
I honestly think thats part of the reason he got that contract early.
And yall know his name means king cake> im not kidding. hes a perfect fit for the city and then he goes and trashes his fellow hatian vilma and ur boy big will. Im still torn up over this

When dissecting a Defense you have to look at the top.
Our best defensive player is Cam Jordan. He is the Captain on this defense whether he wears a patch or not. He needs to make this group accountable to him. He needs to continuously play at that level. Too many times when watching games can his presence not be found.
Galette needs to be bumped back down in the pecking order in terms of leadership. He is not a Squad Leader. He is at best a really good rifleman. Hand him his SAW and let him get to work doing his thing.
Vacarro should be fine. He was not required to be a leader at all last year and has took a beating this year trying to do too much. He is battling out there and I think as a whole this season will not break him ,but make him better in the long run.
Keenan Lewis based on play is the most professional player we have...he needs to find a way to communicate and take some of that burden of bettering this team upon himself. He obviously is great on a personal level when it comes to his approach as a player...but games are won and lost as a team and there are a bunch of younger men on this team that need him to make it a priority to go out of his way and lead them.
We don't have Vilma anymore but between the players we do have Jordan, Lofton, Lewis, and Byrd leadership should not be an issue.

I agree with a lot of the points in this article, but honestly this team just reeks of a bunch of entitled and arrogant a-holes that have no idea how to fix their own mess.
When you are treated like a country club member for training camp, do you really expect anything less from a team like this?
Training camp has already been reduced to a joke by the NFLPA. You bring in guys like Butler that get screwed by a player like Ingram only to be screwed again when they come back the next year and get cut.
This team is full of self-obsessed players including Brees, Ingram, Gallette, and Vaccarro.
Then you have a coaching staff that refuses to adapt, continues to make the same mistakes, and does things beyond reason to the point that anyone with common thinks they are doing it to prove some idiotic point (like playing your DBs off the line 30 yards against ATL).
Simply put, I think Brees is as much to blame as anyone, and every player on this team has turned soft.
Add to that atrocious coaches not held accountable (I'm looking at you Ingalls, Vitt, McMahon, Johnson, and McGriff) and you have this mess.
It's not a suprise that our OG and C play has completely fallen off the map since Kromer left and Ingalls took over. The dude has no idea how to coach interior line, yet manages to stay on. That is where the great coaches like Belichek separate themselves. They'll let a guy go, whether coach or player, if they aren't up to par or worth what they get.

The thing is the Saints really aren't very talented at this point.
Their WR corp with Cooks out is at the bottom of the league. Graham is playing like a bitch. Colston has been terrible all year. The secondary without Byrd and an injured Lewis is the worst in the league right there with Chicago.
Listing the Saints talent just behind New England's is absurd.
