Super Bowl Champions & WRs

So you're upset the Saints didn't add a playmaking WR like Calvin Johnson, Odell Beckham or Julio Jones to their roster?
Not a problem.
Here are the WR final rosters of the last 15 Super Bowl Champs. (Pro Bowl season in bold font):
2014 Pats: Danny Amendola, Josh Boyce, Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell, Matthew Slater, Brian Tyms
2013 Seahawks: Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Percy Harvin, Ricardo Lockette, Golden Tate
2012 Ravens: Anquan Boldin, Tandon Doss, Jacoby Jones, Torrey Smith, David Reed, Deonte Thompson
2011 Giants: Ramses Barden, Victor Cruz, Jerrel Jernigan, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks, Devin Thomas
2010 Packers: Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, James Jones, Jordy Nelson, Brett Swain
2009 Saints: Adrian Arrington, Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem, Lance Moore, Courtney Roby
2008 Steelers: Santonio Holmes, Limas Sweed, Hines Ward, Nate Washington
2007 Giants: Plaxico Burress, Domenik Hixon, Sinorice Moss, Steve Smith, Amani Toomer, David Tyree,
2006 Colts: Marvin Harrison, Aaron Moorehead, Ricky Proehl, John Standeford, Reggie Wayne, Terrence Wilkins
2005 Steelers: Sean Morey, Lee Mays, Antwaan Randle El, Hines Ward, Nate Washington, Cedrick Wilson
2004 Pats: Deion Branch, David Givens, Bethel Johnson, Kevin Kasper, David Patten
2003 Pats: Deion Branch, David Givens, Bethel Johnson, J. J. Stokes, Dedric Ward
2002 Bucs: Reggie Barlow, Joe Jurevicius, Keyshawn Johnson, Keenan McCardell
2001 Pats: Bert Emanuel, Terry Glenn, Curtis Jackson, Charles Johnson, Sean Morey, David Patten, Tony Simmons, Torrance Small
2000 Ravens: Billy Davis, Qadry Ismail, Patrick Johnson, Jermaine Lewis, Brandon Stokley, Travis Taylor
Only 6 out of 84 WRs with Super Bowl rings were formerly recognized as being great/elite the year their team won it all.
Outside of the 2010 Packers, most Champions are hard-pressed to have at least one WR on their roster who had a "great"/Pro Bowl season.
Some teams had former or future pro bowl players on their rosters, but most didn't have elite seasons the year their teams won it all.
Most teams simply had quality/capable chain movers, mixed in with some deep threat role players.
A lot of the "playmakers" on their teams came from the return units, the RB's, or the defense.
Not a problem.

Man that 2010 Packers team was so clutch, basically won like 6 playoff games technically (may be less) because their last few games were win or go home.
And they destroyed the Falcons in Atlanta.
See the thing I'm worried about with our receivers though, can they get enough separation? Those receiver squads above likely did not have problems getting open.

If the offseason & draft were any indication, the Saints are most likely gonna pound the ball on the ground like they did in 2006 (and 2009).
Therefore, I think the Colston, Cooks, Spiller, Hill, Morgan, Toon, Watson etc.. will see some favorable coverages to move the chains/score.

Pats have a gronk. He isn't a wr, but many would consider him a top end receiving option as well as a willing blocker. But I agree with your post, solid run game will give you enough balance to win

Plus an improved OL will give Drew more time to throw, making getting separation easier.

And Brees might actually play smarter and spread it around by throwing "where the defense ain't" instead of targeting Graham and Colston on 3rd down.

Still hope we pick up a couple WRs in FA though :)

Yea but WRS are important. You can just hurt yourself over investing in them.
I think its vital to have WRS on your team that all fill distinct roles and contribute every play.
Since maybe 2012, the Saints have had too much of the same kinda talent at WR.
Our 2011 WRS were an all time great unit and are a textbook example of WRS each filling distinct roles

We got a long way to go before we see the final roster.
Injuries, vet cuts around the league, camp surprises, and improved progress or digression of current Saints WRs will determine the roster decisions.
Payton loves moving the ball easily. He might be more commited to the ground game, but he's not a masochist. He'll have capable catchers on this team.

If Brees has time in the pocket, they'll get separation.
ETA: also, does anyone else see Watson having a big year? I'm not talking about anything close to Graham's numbers but I see him being much more involved in the passing game this year.

From limited tape of course I actually think Hill will have the bigger year. Good hands. Can play all three downs and runs after the catch much better than Ben.
And CJ Spiller might be one of the best FA pick ups of the year.

I don't think that's the problem at all. Most people's problem is that every WR on our roster has barely or not even seen the field besides Cooks, Colston, and Morgan. Most of the guys you listed have all still been accomplished WR's in the league.
With Drew Brees as our QB...I'm good. But he can't do everything himself.

Our capable WR corps in 2011:
Adrian Arrington
Marques Colston
Devery Henderson
Robert Meachem
Lance Moore
Courtney Roby
Jimmy Graham and Sproles were the playmakers while Colston had consistent (Pro Bowl worthy) production.
But as unbelievable as that offensive team was to watch, it didn't win any trophies either like some other failed record-setting offenses: 2000 Rams, 2007 Pats, 2013 Broncos.

Oh I'm expecting Hill to perform well too. But I think both will be productive. Especially if Drew has time and is spreading the ball well (which he has done well when Graham would get hurt).

Picking (formerly available) Devante Parker (or any drafted WR) would not have added the necessary experience to the unit either.
Not drafting a WR is what all the hoopla is about on this board, not vet FA pickups.
But again, Sean Payton will not have a final roster of camp body WRs.
In his least productive passing year stat-wise, Payton's offense still had over 4300 yards thru the air. That year was 2009.
He'll have guys who can catch, believe dat.

While I love your post, there is a major oversight to it...
You failed to list the tight ends on roster for those Super Bowl Champions.
Last time I checked, tight ends can catch the ball as well.
(Pro Bowl season in bold font)
2014 Pats: Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, and Tim Wright
2013 Seahawks: Zach Miller, Kellen Davis, and Luke Wilson
2012 Ravens: Ed Dickson, Dennis Pita, and Billy Bajema
2011 Giants: Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum
2010 Packers: Donald Lee, Tom Crabtree, and Andrew Quarless
2009 Saints: Jeremy Shockey, Tory Humphrey, and David Thomas
2008 Steelers: Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth
2007 Giants: Jeremey Shockey and Kevin Boss
2006 Colts: Dallas Clark, Bryan Fletcher, and Ben Utecht
2005 Steelers: Heath Miller, Matt Kranchick, and Jerame Tuman
2004 Pats: Daniel Graham and Zeron Flemister
2003 Pats: Fred Baxter, Christian Fauria, and Daniel Graham
2002 Bucs: Ken Dilger, Rickey Dudley, and Mike Solwold
2001 Pats: Johnny McWilliams, Rod Rutledge, and Jermaine Wiggins
2000 Ravens: Ben Coates, John Jones, Shannon Sharpe, and Frank Wainright
Although there may not be many Pro Bowlers listed, keep in mind that there are fewer tight ends utilized than there are wide receivers (hence fewer potential Pro Bowlers), there are still some big names listed above.

3 of the last 11 Super Bowl MVPs have been Wide Receivers. 7 have been QBs and 1 was a LBer.
Just throwing that out there.
